I would love to take your data for a spin later tonight. Some thoughts come to mind based on the other posts.

The DSS autosave file is indeed saved as 32bit, however, it by nature is only 16bits deep with the remainder being zeros if I recall. Thus, there is no loss of resolution in converting from 32bits to 16bit when working with the autosave file. The dialog that presents itself after stacking in DSS gives the users the options to tweak the image and then save it to a presumably 16bit tiff file. The problem is this file is likewise only 8bits in depth. Stretch the curves on a an 8bit jpeg file and you get the idea quickly of the significance of this; there histogram will pixelate.

So, the standard work flow is to use the Autosave file and converting it 16bits using a conversion tool or a problem such as PS.

The histogram on the DSLR screen may not be displaying the profile for the raw image. Sometimes opening the individual frames in PS and increase the "exposure" in the Camera Raw filter such that the black point is no longer clipped can be a big help. It's important to perform such steps exactly the same way from sub to sub, so creating an "Action" within PS may allow for this. The resulting frames can be opened and stacked within DSS afterwards. One thing to note is that this workaround requires the frames to be demosaiced within a program such as Adobe Camera Raw or Nebulosity beforehand.

John (I mean JohnP_1), let's not bank on the possible presence of a 32-bit save bug in DSS at some time in the past that was noticed by one of our members (I know who you are referring to). This may or may not have been correct at some point in time, it was never verified by others AFAIK. My comments are based on the fact that when DSS saves the Autosave.tif all 32 bits are saved. If anyone can prove that this is not true please speak up but we need proof of that.

Other John, saving 32-bit data in 16 bits is disastrous because you lose all the low count numbers, which is where most of the nebulosity data resides. AFAIK PS loads 32 bit data, are you using PS Elements perhaps? That would explain why you can't load 32 bits. If you don't have a 32-bit editor then before you save from DSS it as 16 bit, first stretch the image in DSS to spread out the bits well enough that you don't lose too much of that precious information.

Hopefully this explains it. I expect that others who use this Autosave.tif will experience similar improvements over the 16 bit TIFs that I have seen.

The image on the drop box page is a .tiff, needs to be a .fts format.

Check in DSS intermediate files .fits format.

    In output file name .tif/.fits

Not sure how the others got a .tif to open in DSS

Just curious, why would you want the Autosave in FITS format? Is that needed to import it in some other program? I remember having trouble with FITS files in Nebulosity, some people mentioned that the FITS format is so free that it can be confusing.

Unfortunatley, I cannot open a RAW file in Adobe RAW. I have tried numerous times to install that plug in on my PS3. It gives me an error message stating that you need AR 4.6. So I downloaded 4.6 and still won't work. On PS site, it also says that you need 5.? to use RAW and my version of PS cannot except that version. I've pulled my hair out trying to get Adobe RAW to work.

Am using PS 3, not Elements. I cannot even get RAW files to open in this version. See my above comments.

Thanks for the help, but here again is another example of which is the right way. A couple weeks ago, someone told me to NOT use TIFF's and to use FITS. The when I posted a question about FITS many said to use TIFF's.

LOL I misspoke sorry you can open .tif DSS I meant for Star tools, sorry about that. They all kind of run together sometimes.

Anyhow I took a quick pass at it. The noise floor is of course pretty high and there are some other anomalies in there I did not take time with but here it is.

For Star Tools, the autosave fits is the preferred option. Star Tools will not open a 32 bit tiff but will open a 16 bit tiff.
This used to be a great place to hang out but now it is not safe here anymore.

    Thanks UM! No problem...
Did you process that in Star Tools or PS? I'm guessing Star Tools?

Yes star tools. I opened it in DSS to get it into the .fits format. Stacked a single frame but did no stretch in it.

I am sure I could do better with it but its not too bad.
