In looking at the subframes at the bottom of your byeos screen shot it appears that there are some trees or other terrestrial objects in frame. Also there appears to be a wide variation of dynamic range in the subs. I don't know if these were included in the stack or not.

Maybe provide the un stacked subs too?

Also note the wide separation in the histogram between the red and other channels. This is a result of the filter. While it is not a 'killer' it can impact the processing of the image.

Sometimes believe it or not you may get better results without the filter

I did not look at the previous data but maybe I will look at it this afternoon when I get home from work (if others haven't already done so). But I still suggest that a large part of the problem with this data is the huge noise to signal ratio due to the extreme sensor temperature of 100F.

Please don't go by the thumbnails at the bottom of BYEOS. They were test shots as was waiting for M31 to clear trees. They are not in the stack. The sensor temp was at 72*. This was last night and a new test, NOT the original post.

Ah okay. I kind of figured that but you never know

I am sure the others will have a pass at it before I do but we will see.

70F is a lot better than 100F its still kind of high but not much you can do about it. Good news is cooler weather is not far away at all

That Autosave.tif data looks much better. At least now I can widen the color curves in DSS, which makes everything easier. The horizontal stripes are also much reduced.

    m31_2stars_b_settings.jpg

For future reference, never save the stacked data in 16 bits for further processing unless you stretched it first, properly! Otherwise always use the Autosave.tif to pass to 32 bit editors.

Here's what I got using DSS first (see above) then balancing the color in WLPG. Not super and I did not work hard on it but to me this shows you are on the right track, now it is just a matter of more lights. The tracking seems to be very good.

Keep in mind that light filters will reduce your over all light flux and will require longer imaging (but maybe that's needed if the LP is really bad).

Thanks Henk! I have very heavy LP. I purchased the D1 for that reason. But the frustration level is increasing exponentially as I haven't been able to get a decent image. I did get M27 last night and that came out pretty good. I am supposed to go to a star party this weekend at a dark area but the weather reports aren't looking good.
Am anxious to see how much better photos come out at a darker site.

I am also trying Star Tools and it wouldn't allow me to open the autosave tiff. It gave me a message saying "Can't open file. Must be a TIFF File"...which it is.

Also - In the past, when I have tried to process a 32 bit tiff in PS, it has to be converted to 16 bit to process. Why then save in 32 bit?

Star tools will not accept a 32bit Tiff file, simply convert it to 16bit and it will load.

John, later versions of PS will allow some 32 bit processing. In my latest image (M31, coincidentally) I am trying to apply the tools that support 32 bit first (Gradient Xterminator, Levels), then converting to 16 bit for curves and saturation adjustments.

BTW, DSS will allow you to process out a lot of the LP, (choose the RGB calibration option when stacking). That will result in an image with a gray background, but I agree that using an LP filter makes things more difficult in post-processing. I never use mine anymore, and I have been happier with my result.

In terms of the frustration question, if there is one thing astrophotography has taught me, it's patience. Every time I sit down to image or process or whatever, I am not looking for the final product--I'm just looking to learn something. I will have nights where everything is a complete failure because of gremlins. I look at it and I ask myself, "Did I learn something?" If I did, I consider the night a success.
