You can create a 'named' 32 bit .tif file in DSS it's data is identical to the autosave files. Handy when working with color channels.

Sensor temps were near 100+. Very high.
I am going to take a wild guess and say that is the root of the problem.

Yes but how do we know if it was not saved as a 16 bit tif? Too much uncertainty.

    John,

The data does not seem to be the best. your LP filter may do a good job of helping you cut into the sky, but it is costing you certain wavelengths, which causes hard-to-process-out coloring. I would wager that the reddish banding across the photo is an artifact of the high sensor temp, but I am not knowledgeable on DSLR's. Lastly, the stars are streaked, which points to either a tracking or PA issue.

I'd really need the original files and to go over everything with you from start to finish. You need to edit the files a bit more in DSS than you are first off. Then later use levels and curves to stretch out the details more. You'll get there eventually. Keep at it!

I attached my rendition of M31 here. Pretty much all DSS, a little tweaking in WLPG. I see many horizontal stripes. The data is very difficult to work with. Perhaps it is caused by the filter. Did you select the right camera type in DSS for stacking (Bayer mask)?

For 1.30 hours at 1600 ISO you should get a much better M31 than what you have.
What I meant by "virgin" is that it is a straight stacked tiff file from DSS. Nothing tweaked. Just stacked and save with Embed as I mentioned in #1 post. They have been saved as 16 bit TIFF's.

File was named M31 DSS Embed (tiff). I do name all my files for identification. Nothing was tweaked in DSS.

Thanks to all for trying to help. I DO appreciate it. But this is where a lot of confusion (for a beginner) comes into play. Some say to do some editing in DSS others say not to. To be honest, I have done it both ways. At the moment, I do lean more to doing a little tweaking in DSS before saving. The files I've drop-boxed have NOT been altered or tweaked. They have been saved as a 16bit TIFF'S.

Thanks Mike. PA is dead on but I am shooting un-guided so that could be the streak issue. Like some others have said, the high sensor temps is probably causing a lot of the problems. Tonight, the temp is about 20* cooler so h oping it shows better results.
I am in the process of shooting M31 right now. Am paying close attention to histogram as it is a little over the 1/3 mark. Will have 50 subs @.90". Will process tomorrow and post. I did manage to get about 15 subs of M27 before it went over the house. Came out pretty good.

And that could very well be why we are struggling so much. By saving them as 16 bit Tiffs you threw the low light information out. What we need is 32 bit accuracy as in the Autosave.tif. Can you post the Autosave.tif of both so we can try again?

    Processed 100% in Photoshop.

A lot of good detail in the core ... however, a lot of noise, streaks and color blotches outside the core!

A good start ... just needs more exposure time.
