Thanks again Richard for the data to work with.

Gordon I am loving these challenges, thanks for reviving them!

I downloaded the trial version of Pixinsight(what an amazing program) and have tried this challenge using it.
Ok my workflow as far as memory goes.

    1) STF
    2) Dynamic background extraction
    3)Background neutralization
    4)Colour callibration
    5)Denoise
    6)Histogram stretch
    7)Tweak saturation/hue
8)convert to JPEG for uploading to forum( PI tells me I lose data quality here!)

One thing I have noticed is the image I see on my laptop is way different to that on the desktop PC.
So a lot of copying between the two was needed to confirm the final image was what I thought it is!

I may even attempt a second image, as this image still deserves more work.

Thanks for looking at my fledgling attempts at AP processing.
It has been a fun journey thus far.

    Without further ado...

    Challenge 20(PI 22).jpg

    Cheers
    .

Do you have an HDMI outlet in your laptop? All laptops on today's market have at least one HDMI port. Use an HDMI cable to hook your laptop to your desktop monitor. Or, instead of hooking it to your desktop monitor, you could hook it up to a TV (if the kids let you).

Such nice data I wanted to try again. This time trying to produce a "softer" result.

    Photoshop
    Curves and Levels
    Crop
    Noise Reduction with Surface Blur
    Luminance layer
    Brightness/Contrast
Adjust color balance with R, G, B left edge matching in Levels
Highpass filter with star mask selectively applied to nebula with layer mask
    Luminance layer
    Brightness/Contrast
    Levels
Noise reduction in nebula low level luminosity (Noiseware Community Edition) [Used layer mask]
Slight adjustment to colors with Color Balance
    Selective Saturation with Sponge tool
    Brightness/Contrast
Change to 8-bits, resize to 1000 pixel width and save as JPEG

    Challenge 20 New 1.jpg

    Thanks for looking,

Can anyone enter? Lovely to work with such a nice image. I've done 3 different versions and I like this the one the best.

    Photoshop CS 5 Extended:
Multiple levels adjustments in each colour channel plus luminence channel to bring out details
Curves adjustment to increase contrast and brightness
Then I put into Noise Ninja for noise reduction, though the noise wasn't super bad.

    This was a fun challenge.

These are the steps I took.

    upsampled to 11 x 7.3 at 300 dpi
Deconvolution - Smart Sharpen amt 300%, radius 2px, gaussian blur
8 x curve stretches, precluding saturation in highlights
    Crop to trim back rim
Eliminate light pollution by adjusting color channels to the left
adjust red channel globally to bring grey background into balance
Adjust grey point in levels on dust lane within galaxy
    curve stretch again
set grey point in levels at Reference point
Adjust highlights downward to preserve color
Define white point by equalizing RGB channels in bright local star
    Spilt file into RGB channels.
Create luminance frame by discarding color and performing an average software bin in Nebulosity.
Resize luminance frame x 2 using Lanczos sinc process
Perform noise reduction on each channel separately in Noise Ninja.
Align and scale the separate channels including the luminance frame
Recombine image channels into LRGB file in Nebulosity
Re-open in PS. Tweak color channels to equalize on bright local star.
Adjust highlights to preclude saturation. Adjust curves for final stretch.
Adjust color temperature and hue to balance background
Light Pollution Removal action for PS by ProDigital Software
New layer. High pass filter with 167 pixel radius. Combine with Soft Light blend.
Camera Raw filter. Exposure +0.75, Adjust black level and highlights to fully use the range. Boost clarity and saturation. Local painted mask boosting local exposure and clarity further with tweak on sharpness
Reduce saturation of pure green by about 90%
    Cuves, linear contrast increase
Red chanel reduced ot balance color in arms of galaxy in keeping with broadband color; adjust vibrance
    Adjust color channels to "pop"
In Levels, adjust black pt slider to 15 and gamma to 1.1
Median noise reduction, radius 1 pixel
Local Contrast Increase - Action form ProDigital Software
    Perform final software average bin
Inport into iPhoto and export as maximum quality jpeg with max dimension 1000 pixels

Here is my attempt using Pixinsight. First time processing a galaxy, they seem to be harder than nebulae.

    Steps:

    DynamicCrop
    DynamicBackgroundExtraction
    BackgroundNeutralization
    ColorCalibration
    AtrousWaveletTransform for some Noise Reduction
    HistogramTransformation
    StarMask
    RangeMask
PixelMath for combining star_mask and range_mask
    LocalHistogramLocalization for first version
    HDRMultiscaleTransform for second version
    CurvesTransformation
    Saved to Jpeg
Photoshop CC for combining the two versions of the Pixinsight images
    Re-saved to jpeg

I finally did my version of M33 for challenge 20. This one wasn't quite as easy as challenge 19 because this one had a lot of thermal noise. I used PI to do all the work.

    below are the steps taken
-Dynamic Crop to remove stacking artifacts
-Resample to upsample the images size
-TGVDenoise to help blend away artifacts left from upsampling
    -DynamicBackgroundExtraction
    -BackgroundNeutralization
    -ColorCalibration
-SCNR on green with preserve lightness unchecked
-TGVDenoise more aggressively using a mask
    -MaskedStretch
-AtrousWaveletTransform used to make a new image of just the small details
-PixelMath used to take the main image and subtract the small details image from to come up with a new image of just the large structures
-Now that I have a separate image with the small detail in one and the large structures in the other, I can now enhance them accordingly. I used CurvesTransformations on both but I also used LocalHistogramEqualization on the large structures.
-PixelMath to add those 2 images back together to make a new image that is normal looking again
-CurvesTransformations to give one last little tweek
    -Script: DarkStructureEnhance
