    Open in PixInsight
    Apply STF
    Crop a bit
    DynamicBackgroundExtraction with automatic sample generation
    BackgroundNeutralization
ColorCalibration (using center of galaxy as white point)
Create RangeSelection mask to get most of galaxy
Create StarMask mask to get the stars feathered
Merge masks into one and apply to image, invert mask
    ATrousWaveletTransform to remove background noise
Apply HDRMultiscaleTransform on main galaxy area to bring out dark bands
    Apply STF as HistogramTransformation
Adjust curves to pull down background sky
Adjust color saturation to emphasize blues and reds
Mask out galaxy & stars, reduce saturation to remove brown cast to background sky
    Open in Photoshop
    Levels, bring up black point
    Magic wand select background sky
Adjust curve to bring down background sky some more

Interested to hear if folks think I should've done a bit of light smoothing of the main galaxy.

Really nice Richard. I had fun with it. So little AP to do these days due to weather...

I used my usual StarTools workflow (attached). Then I added a little bit of PS tools including creating a luminosity layer, and using Carboni's action to do a local contrast enhancement, deep space noise reduction, along with a few curves and increased saturation. That's about it.

Very good data to play with. Thank you!

This is my first try at the AP Challenge and I enjoyed working on this beautiful galaxy. Thanks for providing the image, Richard.

Here is my interpretation of M33 as processed in PixInsight through the following steps:

    Dynamic Crop
    SCNR to remove the red
    Dynamic Background Extraction
    Background Neutralization
    Color Calibration
    ATrous Wavelet – 2 iterations
    Histogram Transformation
    Curves to establish base color
    LRGB Combination to enhance color
Add’l soft Curves for color saturation
    HDR Multiscale Transform
Local Histogram Equalization to enhance dust lanes
    Convolution to smooth edges
    Unsharp Mask
    ACDNR
    Resample, save as JPG

    Thanks for looking.

    Clear skies for all,
    Ron

Well here's what good ole DSS can achieve by itself. I believe the saturation was 35% IIRC. Great challenge!

Be sure to use it through a star mask. Otherwise, you risk increasing the sizes of dark artifacts in the image.

I didn't for a long time, but since I use an external monitor with my Mac sometimes, I was having issues. Also, I found the contrast in my images would be way off when viewing an image on my iphone or someone else's computer/device. Not to mention trying to print the images . Anyway, not terribly expensive, and well worth it. I use the Spyder pro. Just need to make sure you get one that supports multiple monitors.

I forget who it was on this site, but someone recommended this solution to me. Curious as to how many people use an external calibration tool. Perhaps some are better at getting their monitors calibrated manually.
