    Default Announcing AP Challenge 19!

    ************************************************** ***********************************
    Announcing the AstronomyForum.net
    Astrophotography Processing Challenge number 19!

About once a month a new 'Challenge' photo will be made available. These will be announced in a new thread 'stickied at the top of the Astrophotography Processing Forum. Members may click on the link and download the calibrated 16 bit .tif file (Keep in mind these will be very large files so give them some time to download to your computer) These images will be 'pre-processed' images (darks, flats, bias removed and stacked). Due to the limits of the forum, the images have been resized and converted to 16 bit format to allow posting.

This Challenge thread will close at the end of January, and a new Challenge will be posted. You can still download and play with the image however you will not be able to enter the Challenge after the thread is closed.

    ____________________________________________

We ask that the members use any software they want, GIMP, Photo Shop (or PS Elements), Pixinsite, Images Plus, StarTools, AstroArt, IRIS or whatever your little heart desires to post process the image. Attach the completed image (please post as a .jpg max 1000 x 1000 pixel size) on the same tread and include the methods you used to get to the end result. Please submit your methods with as complete of detail as you can so others will have some idea how you got to the final result.

    ___________________________________________
    Example:

Post processed using Photoshop CS2 with Noel Carboni's actions

    1. levels and curves to bring out
    DSO
    2. Noel Carboni's plug in "Soft Color Gradient removal"
3 Set black and white points using levels
4 Noel Carboni's plug in "Local contract enhancement"
5 Did some minor cosmetic fixes using
    PS clone stamp.
6 Increased saturation using Adam Blocks method. (can give details if you like.
7 Noel Carboni's plug in "Increase star color"
8 A final pass of levels and curves, used curves to help pull out the contrast.
9 Noel Carboni's plug in "Deep Space noise reduction" and a couple of passes with the "Denoise" PS plugin.
10 PS "Smart Sharpen" tool (Shadow, fade 80%
    Highlight, 20%
    Power, 65%)
11 Resized to 1000 px max and converted to .jpg.

    _________________________________________________

Please export your full history from Photoshop, GIMP or similar programs - See here: How To Document & Post Your Processing Steps from History Photoshop CS, Gimp Software LINK

The concept is to allow members to share processing techniques and ideas so everyone can learn and improve. The Challenge is open to all so don't feel intimidated as we are all learning. If you see a post and don't understand how a particular process is being done please ask as I'm sure there will be many new methods.

The plan is only one Challenge image will be used for each thread so it will be easy to see the different results and methods for a particular image. I may be asking some of our accomplished AP er's to contribute a pre-processed image from time to time so we can get some variety.

Keep in mind we now have a sponsor for the Challenge!

Ivo from StarTools will be donating a free license for his StarTools software (here's a link to his website Welcome | StarTools) for the best completed Challenge image, one license will be awarded for the best post processed Challenge image every 3rd Challenge. (ie this one will be for Challenge 17, 18 and 19).

The post above mentions closing at the end of December. I'm assuming it should read January?

Very nice capture Richard! My processing attempt attached, using PI. Don't think I really did justice to your data though.

    Challenge_19_Horsehead_rbish237_resize.jpg

Here is the workflow I used - this is my first try at a challenge, really looking forward to learning from the talent on this forum!
    1. Crop out dark borders
    2. Extract RGB channels
    3. LinearFit R,B to G
    4. Channel Combination to get back to RGB
    5. DBE
    6. Background Neutralization
    7. ColorCalibration
    8. SCNR to take out Green
    9. Extract L layer for later processing
    10. AtrousWavelet to reduce noise (using stretched Lum mask to protect bright areas)
    11. Histogram transform to stretch
    12. Curves to boost Saturation with a mask to protect dark areas
    13. AtrousWavelet with smaller scales removed to blur the image a bit. RGB image is ready to re-combine with Lum later.

    14. Begin processing extracted Lum data
    15. Atrous noise reduction for Lum, just a touch
    16. Stretch Lum with Histogram Transform
    17. HDR (with star mask) to lightness only
    18. Local Histogram Equalization (with a mask for only large scale bright objects created using Atrous)
    19. Unsharp mask to bright areas of Lum - just a touch
    20. ACDNR to reduce luminance noise with a mask applied via the tool.

    21. LRGBCombination to combine final Lum image with final slightly blurred RGB image
    22. Dark Structure Enhance Script (just a little bit)
    23. MorphologicalTransform to reduce stars, using mask made from atrouswavelets to select only smaller structures and Star Mask to create the mask.
    24. Curves (with mask to protect dark areas) to boost sat
    25. Curves to apply a slight S-curve to boost contrast at bit. Did this twice.

    26. Bring final image out of PI to Photoshop to re-size, convert to jpeg.

This is beautiful data with which to work. Rob's image looks so nice I almost didn't even post mine. I don't understand his work flow, but, love his results.
This is my entry processed with PS CS2 and Astronomy Tools Actions:

    Challenge19 PS3.jpg

    1. Crop black areas
    2. Stretch using Curves and Levels
    3. Balance colors using Middle Eye Dropper of Levels
    4. Stretch again with Curves and Levels
    5. Sharpen with High Pass
    6. Use Sponge tool to increase saturation of nebulae
    7. Run Astronomy Tools "Make Stars Smaller"
    8. Use Hue/Saturation to finalize image.

Default Re: Announcing AP Challenge 19!

    Hey everyone...
As I mentioned before, this is some quality data...
Well Done Richard... I'm now looking at that CLS filter of yours.

    Anyway, back to the contest.

    Processed in PixInsight

    Linear Processing
Open image and convert to 32 bit fits file
    (Very pleasantly surprised!!!)
    Initial dynamic crop
Background Neutralization and color calibration using previews
Automatic Background Extractor (x2 division, x2 subtraction)
    TGV Denoise noise reduction
    Masked stretch
Histogram and curve tweaks using the range and star masks created from clone

    That got me to here:
    Original HH.jpg

    Non-Linear Processing
    Create clone
Create range selection and star masks
Used Gerard's awesome tutorial on nebula extraction located here:

How to "remove" stars from image using PI?

(You will need to register on the PI forum, but I believe it's also on YouTube).

That got me this image, which is basically a tone map of the original.

    Nebula push.jpg

I then used PixelMath to combine the two as in Gerald's video.
I applied a few minor histogram and curve adjustments to it, but really didn't have to do too
    much else.
    Completed Challenge 19.jpg

    Richard,
I can't believe just how much data you were able to grab in those short frames! Well Done!
Thanks for offering this up for the contest
    Jim

Here's my version. As already said, this data was very easy to work with! Well done Richard.

This was processed in StarTools. You'll see in the log that I didn't do much. It's the data (and the software) that does it. I added finishing touches with PS though as I often do. Sharpening, saturation, a few curves, and star reduction.

    This is fun!
