    Very nice George.
I'd be interested to hear details on how you setup these two processes for star handling. If ever there was an area of PI processing that I find tricky it is star handling

    Cheers,
    Richard

Hi Richard, hopefully this is ok to explain the steps in more detail.

    1. Multiscale Linear transform to round stars after up sampling
This one was straight forward, but I like to get the image to a "reasonable size (say 3500 pixels across) so I up sample the image but this looks bad so I apply MLT to round off the stars, below is the result. As a point I think I missed a step in my processing of the foreground, I think if we applied Deconvolution to that image it would sharpen up the stars prior to merging into the result, just an idea
    1_RichardMLT.png

    2. Masked Multiscale Transform to reduce/remove small stars
This one was more complicated as it first needed a starmask produced.
    2_Richard_StarMask.png

Then with the mask applied I could apply MultiScale Median Transform MMT. This removed most the stars.
    3_RichardMMT.png

The final bit was to use the Morphological Transformation to reduce the remaining ones as much as possible.
    4_RichardMorph.png

Anyway hope that helps things, as a point your data is wonderful, you have managed capture some wonderfully "smokey like texture" over on the left hand side of the image that I'd not seen before.

    Richard,

Thank you for making your data available for this challenge.
I had a wonderful time of learning to process and the good data made it all the easier.
I can easily see how you blokes start to re-mortgage the house to practice AP!

I believe you have set the bar pretty high!

    Thanks again good Sir.

    Cheers

    Here is my attempt

    Challenge19final.jpg

    Processed in CS5
    Open file
    Duplicate
    Level adjust
    Curve 1
    Curve 2
    Copy
    Mask copy
copy image into mask to make star mask
    invert
    curve a little
level adjust to increase black so stars are covered
    copy star mask

Use star mask in curve adjustments
    create new star mask
curve adjustment with new star mask

Work through and balance star masks with Gaussian blur until stars look good enough
Level to adjust black and white point
    flatten image
    copy

    HDR toning
adjust level and balance exposure, gamma and detail

copy to master and adjust opacity and fill

    adjust saturation and vibrancy
add false luminance and adjust brightness

plus a few more steps I am sure I've missed lol

Just want echo everybody else....proper quality data Richard, i hope i've done it proud! Thanks for the opportunity to work with it.

Ok here is my take on the challenge. Great image, lots of detail (Another challenge for me to capture a image of this quality). It's a challenge for beginner like me to bring out all the detail and colors. I am still not happy with the image but I will keep trying. Image is a bit noisy for my liking. Any comments suggestions will be absorbed.

Level/ Curve adjustment in Photoshop CS6 Camera Raw
Soft Color Gradient adjustment with Star Tools Action Plugin
    Reduce Star Size
Reduce Large Blue Halos in Star Tools
    Levels/ Curve adjustment
There may be one or two steps I forgot as I was trying different settings.
