Here's mine just using DSS. A bit on the red side, but that's all I could get with it. Saturation 50%.

    Hi all,

Result below processed with the latest StarTools 1.4 alpha.
I won't post the worklfow just yet (I'm disqualified anyway ), but I'll give some hints to those who use StarTools.

    • Don't forget to calibrate your colors before switching Tracking off. This area is rife with blue reflection nebulae. Note though that you won't get star colors (temperature distribution) perfect due to the LP filter that was used.
    • Apply some deconvolution if your software supports it - this nice deep data can take it!
    • Take it easy on the noise reduction in the Flame nebula - it's not a featureless area; it exhibits a lot of detail.
    • Be careful not to let Alnitak 'swallow' the small/close star to its left (use AutoDev in StarTools); keep your highlights under control. Do this and you'll find the reflection nebulae will more readily show the stars in them that drive them, instead of being shrouded in white.

    Cheers,

At the risk of being Goat Boy, here's my attempt. It was a great image to start with so I didn't think it needed a lot of TLC.

    Using PixInsight, here's my steps:

    Dynamic Crop
    Dynamic Background Extraction
    Background Neutralization
    Color Calibration
    Histogram Transformation
and a couple passes of the Curves Transformation to make it pop.

Just playing around after snowshoeing all day and thought this was neat. It reminds me of a painting so I thought I would share.

How does one extract the blues in the image. I get a fairly decent image but the Reds dominate. Any advice will be appreciated. I am using Photoshop CS6.

Here’s my go at the image using Pixinsight, by the way great data Richard.

Whilst the image quality is really high it does pose a challenge given the massive intensity range and colour depth, so the approach was a little different from my normal. In principle I’ve attempted to process the image in five steps:

    1) Initial preparation and stretching of the linear data
    2) Make copies for the star foreground with the nebula background
3-4) Process foreground and background images separately
    5) Merge the two images into one and complete final processing

    Challange19_Starless_Resample.png

    Initial processing
    Load and Rename
Integer Upsample x 3, to make reasonable size
Dynamic Crop, Realign and crop edges
    DBE to flatten background
    Background and Colour Calibration
Multiscale Linear transform to round stars after up sampling
Histogram Stretch to Non Linear format

    Copy Images
Make Copy of Image to store star data for later inclusion

Process Background Nebula (Generate "Starless" Image to stretch Nebula)
Create star mask for small and medium stars
Masked Multiscale Transform to reduce/remove small stars
Masked Morphological Transformation to remove small/medium stars
Create blurred/smooth Range mask for Big stars
Using Range mask apply HDR Multiscale Transform to reduce large stars
Invert Range mask and apply Exponential Transform to stretch dark nebula disproportionally
    Apply Deconvolution
    Denoise using TGVDenoise
    Masked stretch to darken background
Curves Transformation to increase contrast and colour saturation
    SNCR to remove Green hue

    Process Foreground Star scape
Masked Curves transformation to colour saturate and increase contrast
Masked Morphological Transformation to reduce small & medium stars

    Final Processing:
Now using PixelMath Merge foreground into background
    Repeat SNCR
Curves transformation and Masked stretch to add contrast
Create star mask and brighten stars
Integer Downsample x 3 for return to forum
    Save as loseless PNG
