    Default Open Image Processing M101

Captured with Canon 60 Da at prime focus on TEC 140 APO ED with field flatener. Used Astronomik CLS Clip in filter.
Captured on 2014_03_15, a night with a good deal of moonlight.
    Captured with BYE Premium.
Stacked in DSS. 32 Bit Fits autosave file.
    frames are:
    9x 210 second lights
    9 x 210 second darks
    40 flats
    20 Bias.
    DSS File list shows:
    Bayer Pattern 4
    Blue scale 1.00
    Brightness 1.00

The reason I'm posting is that when processing in StarTools going through Auto Dev> Crop> Auto Dev > Wipe> Auto Dev leaves me with a lovely psychedelic red galaxy pattern though in my younger years I might have enjoyed this image it's just not what I'm looking for now. I'm wondering if the problem is my stacking settings which I have been trying to get right lately, my capture, or my StarTools processing.
So please have a go at it and see if you can make something not psychedelic from it. I'm particularly interested in StarTools processes, but use whatever you want.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mike..
I'm downloading right now.. gonna take about 30-45 min..
I too have had issues with getting a trippy/ psychadelic image and think I figured out how to avoid it..
Using autodev the first time to see stacking artifacts and knowing where to crop works fine but doing it after wipe gives me issues. I use develop after. Paul (pch) shared his log file
from StarTools with me ... I will attempt to do the same..
    Might be a couple hours..

Thanks Kurt. Take your time. I've done both Auto Dev and Dev after crop and wipe, but forgot to do that this time.

    Hey Mike..
Well .. didn't quite come out as I had hoped. Couple odd things I have never seen/experienced..
After bin I autodev and the whole background went red. The only "stars" you could see was the core of the galaxy which was white. All the background stars were gone.. just a wall of red?
Also in Decon I get an error message when auto generating a mask. It says there's not enough pixels covered? I tried auto mask.. manual.. invert and nothing would fill in the background excluding stars as it normally does?
This may be above my paygrade.. lol..
This is what I came up with..

    Here's the log file..
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/59ou75to9g...101logfile.txt

I may give it a go again.. seems like I should be able to do better..
Maybe Paul, Hondo or even Ivo will see this..

Thanks for trying. Your result is better than mine. I'm still wondering if it's my DSS stacking parameters causing the problems. The stack is by far the heaviest I've used on Bias and Flats. Actually it's my first with flats. I think I'll take the whole bunch to my astronomy club on a flash and see if someone might give it a whack from stacking. Still, anyone wanting to give it a shot is more than welcome.

Really don't think it's any stacking parameters..
but I don't know I'm qualified to say that..
The real test will be a good moonless night.. your background turning completely solid red was odd..
You are using the autosave.fts straight from DSS? Not the save Picture to file?
The number of flats and bias aren't going to hurt anything.. mostly the more the better.
I will say next time out try and do at least 1 hr on any target. so if you're limited to 210 sec exposures do 18-20 to get a full hour..
Wish I could be more help..

Kurt, you've helped. You've confirmed the result I was getting with ST. That takes down one possibility in my troubleshooting. I've been looking for more exposure time but between tracking problems (I think that's solved) and clouds I haven't been able to get there.

Hi Mike... I think there may be a problem with your flats. I can see some reverse vignetting.

Phil. that's a new one for me. I have never heard of reverse vignetting, though there are a lot of things I haven't heard of yet. I use a home made flat light source for taking flats. I can make a good guess at was reverse vignetting is by the name, but what causes it and how do I avoid it?
By the way my friend from my club says the red coloration might be a sign of a debayering problem. I'll try restacking today.

There's something odd about the file. I get this error message when I try to open it:
    Untitled.jpg
The downloaded file was only 28kb, so maybe it didn't download properly.
