Thanks for trying Keith. When I get to work I'll open the laptop and verify the files fitness.

Default Re: Open Image Processing 101

Reverse vignetting is when after flat division the outer parts of the image are brighter than the inner ones (normal vignetting is of course the other way round...).
The cause is usually that the flats are too bright (unusual) or there is something wrong with the bias frames... any error in the bias frames can really mess up flats...

However, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your main issue with this image is that it needs a LOT more data - ideally from longer subs, like 5-6 minutes each... and about 30-40 of them.

I tried to process your fits file in PixInsight and there is something strange about it which may be caused by the flats. The red channel histogram is just odd. This implies that the red channel of your flats may be too low (often the case when using a CLS filter).

Also, I can see dust mote like artefacts which should have been removed by the flats but were not.
Can I suggest you upload ALL of your RAW files to DropBox so we can see what is going on?
    regards
    Phil

It should be ~ 200Mb (I downloaded it OK and it opened in PixInsight).

Here's what I came up with. In DSS I first widened the color curves and shaped them identically until they looked much like their envelopes that DSS shows in dotted lines. Then I moved the colors around until the balance was right, shaped the luminance curve appropriately and set the saturation shift to 50%. Then I saved it as a 16 bit TIFF and imported it in Photo Gallery for some final editing.

Thanks for all of your efforts. Yep, I know I need a lot more data, but due to the horrible necessity of work and the conspiracy of whomever is responsible for controlling the weather providing clouds on Saturday nights I have been unable to get much data. I'm working with what I can get so I can learn processing.
I am going to try to load everything in a Zip file and upload it to DropBox. I just don't know if it will all fit.
Phil, your comment about the flats being too bright rings a bell. I am not using the AV flats function in DSS because a friend who is an accomplished image processor evaluated my AV Flats and said they are not bright enough. Adding this to the CLS filter, and the slight blue hue of the LEDs in my flat box makes me wonder if the psychedelic red stuff originates there.
Thanks again to all of you, your willingness to share your knowledge is a priceless resource to me for learning this hobby.

Did you use background calibration in DSS? All peaks were aligned in your FTS file, and the luminance curve was a straight line. It may explain why you got the zombie colors. I have used that once and did not like what it did.

Well processing professors, here's the whole shootin' match. https://drive.google.com/folderview?...kU&usp=sharing It includes 3 sets of flats. The flats are 1/125 and 1/100 second as well as BYE AV ts. Take your pick. The whole folder is nearly 5 GB and took about an hour and a half to upload on my slow WiFi connection. The Darks are from my library and not the best match, but I have a hole in my library at this time / temp.
Again, I'm not thinking I'm going to get a Celestron box image here, I'm just working on my processing skills and I'm trying to work out what the problem is with my process.
By the time I get good at processing I think I will have made every mistake possible to make. Then I'll be able to help other people!

I didn't have a chance to try your image in ST yet but one quick thing you can do to help troubleshooting is to stack without your callibration files and see if the colour issue goes away. That would confirm that the issue is with the callibration files. Then, just add your darks and see the results, then the bias & flats, and see the results.

I also had similar problems recently and found that it was caused by several frames that had a thin layer of cirrus clouds in them which ultimately messed up the whole ST processing workflow. Taking these out from the stack solved the problem instantly for me.

I have a hard time evaluating individual subs because, with my CLS filter and lack of stretching, I pretty much have fields of blue with a few stars. What software can I use to stretch subs temporarily without actually altering them?
