    Default Processing steps, what order?

I am a bit confused as to how I edit my stacked photos. For example, if I have a tint or gradient - do I subtract it before or after doing stretch to the image?

Do you have a good workflow to share? Linear stretching, masked stretching, tips or tricks?
    Best regards, Martin

    Subscribed.

I'm also profiting from all this rain and cloud to learn more about processing.

There are some great workflow tutorials at the top of this forum.

You stretch before you subtract a gradient as it could change after you stretch.

One thing I do recommend doing before changing anything, is ensure you change your image color depth to the highest your program can support or at least 32bit if the image isn't already at 32bit. This way, when you do stretch / remove gradient / change hue or make any other changes, it has the most colors available to use and doesn't have to select a "close enough" color due to a limited color palette.

(ahem) I think you mean you subtract sky gradients BEFORE stretching - gradient removal and colour calibration/balancing should be done while the data is still in linear mode..

Really? All the tutorials I've seen have the conversion from 32 bit (DSS) to 16 bit as the first step. Are all functions available in 32 bit mode?

Another question: what is the best method for stretching?

I don't know, I process in PixInisight which supports 32bit color depths. Downgrading the color depth IMO isn't something you want to do unless you have too as you lose data when you do it. If there are tools that you want to use that don't support higher color depths, then you don't have much of a choice.

I suppose so since the gradient can be seen by the tool that removes it even though the eye may not be able too. At first thought, it didn't seem like the logical choice.

But can I postpone the gradient removal as long as I only do linear stretching? Or does the stretching increase the noise too much?

In PixInsight you MUST do the following in linear mode (i.e. before ANY stretching takes place):

    1) dynamic crop to to remove any residual stacking artefacts from the edge of frames - zoom in and check for black and chequerboard areas (this is critical)
    2) DBE (gradient removal)
    3) Background Neutralisation
    4) Colour Calibration
    5) Deconvolution (if necessary)
    6) 1st pass of Noise Reduction with MMT or TGV

Then and only then can you start using the Histogram Tool or the Masked Stretch Script to take the data out of linear mode.
This is the method I use and is also the standard workflow recommended by the Pi Experts/Authors.

The only reason to reduce to 16-bit first is if you are using software that cannot handle 32 bits. If your software can handle it, keep the maximum depth for as long as you can.

Eventually, you'll have to reduce to 8 bits to post a JPG image, but that is the absolute very last step.
