    Default M31 processing

Well I've been figuring out DSS issues I was having with RGB alignment and other things, so I have been testing it out on my M31 data from last week.

    Here's my previous best:

And here is what I'm working on today:

    Feedback welcome.

    Bill,

it looks like you black-clipped the data. I think you'll also find better results if you also keep the background a bit lighter. I typically go for between 40 and 20 - yours is at 1.

I think you have good data here which is half the battle.

    Hi Bill,

Your processing is coming along nicely. It is as much art as it is science and your latest attempt is quite stunning. Keep at it.

Blacks are VERY clipped - the background sky should not be black!. I can also see what looks like coma around the periphery - are you using a field flattener/coma reducer?

It looks like you have some good data. Could you put the (unedited) autosave.tif file from DSS into Dropbox (or equivalent)?

I'd like to see what could be done with your data...
    regards
    Phil

    Phil,

    Autosave016.tif

I too would love to see what could be done with the data. I am seeing what everyone says about the black clipping, my background got completely black. Here is a link to the autosave.tif on dropbox!

I do not have a field flattner/coma reducer...can you make any recommendations for my C6N (1.25" focuser)? I got this OTA bundled with my AVX for just $100 more than the mount alone, and am eventually (think six months away) going for an AstroTech AT65EDQ which has the built in flattner, and is a much shorter focal length. Anyhow, let me know what you find in the data please! Processing is definitely where I have the most to learn. My autoguider should be here saturday (ordered the mag mini) and I am excited to get some longer exposures going.

I have also read in another thread I posted that I need to use a converter to convert these 32bit .tif images to true 16 bit- I have been using the "save image" function in DSS... Time to figure that out tonight as it looks to be cloudy again. At least these clouds let me learn some processing.

Well this was 100 90 second exposures. With 20 darks 20 flats 20 bias. Figuring out the flats really helped with detail since my images before we're really terribly vignetted.

Also, spending time to get the avx really well aligned I could get 2 min subs unguided...then I backed exposures to 90 sec s I'd have more to keep.

This was taken unguided, but I have a guider on the way finally.

    Hi Bill,

I downloaded the file from Dropbox...unfortunately as you say you have used the "File - Save As - 16 bit tif" feature of DSS which seems to create 8 bit data in a 16-bit wrapper.

Any histogram stretch processing of the "16-bit" version leads to the clipped black and blotchy noise patterns.

Is there any chance you could upload the original 32-bit autosave.tif file?
    regards
    Phil
