My first machine was an 8086 running around 1.2megahertz I think? Remember upgrading it to an 8088 and a 2.5 Mgz Booster chip!... Ha!!
Also remember figuring out how to make a RAM drive big enough to put Flight Sim into using only 640k and upper RAM... Wow..... Blast from the past!!!
    Thanks for that!

I think most people could handle typing "cmd" into the start menu and then typing "convert autosave.tif depth -16 auto16.tif"

Thats absolutely all you have to do. It's not like "autosave.tif" isn't already in 8.3 format :-)

Ya. It's all fun. Brought back some memories pre GUI fooling with DOS.

True enough Phil, but I tend to change the names of the autosave file to the subject name after creation so I can find it again. Only I couldn't, hense the 8.3 comment... It didn't like M42 40x 50.tif at all

Ah - I move each autosave.tif file into its own folder...(which of course can have any name)...
Then, after converting with IM I can rename the 16-bit version at will.

    Understood...
That presented it's own issue as I first tried converting the file located in my "astro pics" directory from another location.... It didn't like that either....

yes - it will work fine if you execute the convert command whilst you are "positioned" within the Astro Pics folder - i.e. so long as you don't use the full filepath :-)

Eventually this bug should get fixed.
What is the tempo for such fixes? I joined the Yahoo Group and see lots of discussion there, but am not synced up with it enough yet to know how often such things get worked on or better yet new releases come out...

Honestly I wouldnt hold my breath... This bug has been there for ages... And as there is a 100% workaround there really isn't much pressure to fix it...
