    Default Photoshop is expensive!

I am reading a lot of threads where you are using Adobe Photoshop. I just noticed that it's $700! Is there something cheaper we can use? i have Lightroom but I can't find any good workflow online for astrophotography.

Is Lightroom useable? Any suggestion of a URL for a good workflow?

How about Photoshop Elements? Does that have what we need? It's much more affordable at $100.

I look forward to your advice...

    thanks,
    Paul

Try this GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program Some people have good luck with it and it's free.

I normally use Deep Sky Stacker for pre-processing (stacking)
    and
    StarTools v1.3 for post processing.

I have used PS but found StarTools works much easier and great results. Here's a link to their website: Welcome | StarTools

not sure if you have any schools around you but most universities have a media library which allow you to use photoshop and what ever else they offer for graphic design.

Yep! My jaw dropped looking at how much some photo editing software costs.. I went and got GIMP myself. I figure for an amateur like me why spend hundreds on software when I could use it for eyepieces or other stuff. It seems people get good results.. I'm really just weeks into learning AP so.. I'm sure someone will come along and give you a better answer.. but GIMP is free.. and no malware or anything.. might be worth trying until you figure out what you want..

I have used PS Elements 6 for a number of years. I resisted upgrading to PS owing to 1) cost and 2) I am not all that good with Elements and could not justify the cost of upgrading to PS proper. There are a number of actions that can be installed into Elements to improve functionality ie Astronomy Tools for Elements Actions Set by ProDigital Software
There are also other actions to be had that allow masking in layers, curves, etc. I recently upgraded to PSE9 which is more like PS than the older version of Elements were. Recently Adobe made an error and made available PS CS2 complete with activation keys as a free download. I grabbed that when it was available. You could open an Adobe account and see if the free download is still available but no guarentees https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitl...ds&pid=4485850
Interestingly enough, the Australian Govt have called a meeting with the big USA software houses to a "please explain" as to why some of their software is 4x more expensive in Oz than in the USA. The aussie TV news pointed out it is cheaper for someone to fly from Sydney to the US return and purchase software stateside than to purchase it locally. It will be interesting.

I use Lightroom, it had most of the tools that you would use if you had the expense CS5. I use PS to convert files into tiffs, then Lightroom for the finish.
