I use DSS and Photo Gallery from Microsoft. PG comes with Windows Live which is free, you can also get web space on Skydrive with that to post your pictures. It is great for getting things done quickly. So my workflow is: DSS -> ImageMagick to convert the autosave.tif to a correct 16-bit tif -> Photo Gallery. I also use Gimp, it is a lot like Photoshop Elements but I find it less convenient. If you get Gimp be sure to get the 16 bit color version that was released recently.

I use a free software called PhotoScape. It really does everything I need & is user friendly. I tried GIMP but the learning curve was too steep for the time I can invest.

Sorry, I just realized you are asking about astrophotography processing.....

Have you considered PixInsight? It's a very powerful, do it all processing software.
If you haven't, give it a trial run. I believe you get a 45 day, fully functional trial period.

StarTools is another great processing software that seems to be getting better and better as new releases come out. Another big plus, it's very inexpensive for what it can do!

Have you considered the Educator's or Student's edition? If you or a family member qualify, you can purchase at a substantial reduced rate...keep in mind you will some type of verification to register the product.

Amazon.com: Adobe CS6 Production Premium Student and Teacher Edition: Software

Good luck and hope the info helps...

If not Photoshop then I'd recommend Pixinsight too. Although there will be a learning curve with that too and some $, but nothing like $700. As a matter of fact if I hadn't purchased Photoshop already I'd definitely go for Pixinsight.

A word of warning on GIMP?

The stable editions of GIMP handle only 8-bit images. For AP it is my understanding you need at least 16-bit depth.

It is my understanding that one or more of the unstable GIMP versions handles 16- and/or 32-bit images.

    All good suggestions.
If you know how to use Photo Shop then "GimpShop" is definitely the way to go its setup like PS and does just about everything needed and is free with a large help community. Remember "GimpShop" not just Gimp.

Adobe was offering the CS2 version of Photoshop for free for a while: http://www.diyphotography.net/downlo...e-cs2-for-free

For the features you would need for processing astrophotos, CS2 is probably just fine...
