I think the issue is that neither file format is 16-bit. The allegedly 16-bit SaveAs is apparently only 8-bits. And the Autosave is 32 bits. Not that there is anything wrong with 32 bits except that a lot of software can't read 32-bit TIFs. You can't ever convert 8-bit files to 16-bits because the other 8 bits are gone forever. So the conversion is to convert 32-bit files to 16-bits so other software can read them.

I thought i was very clear... The autosave.tif file is a 32-bit wrapper containing 16-bit data. If you use the file... Save as feature you get a 16-bit wrapper containing 8-bit data because of a well documented bug in DSS.

If your software cant open autosave.tif, use Irfanview or whatever to open the 32-bit wrapper file and save it as a 16-bit tif file (16 bit wrapper containing 16-bit data).

Jpegs are useless for AP for all sorts of reasons. Not only are they only 8-bit so cant be stretched properly.. they do not represent an accurate reproduction of the positional sensor data across multiple subs so cannot be stacked correctly. Any AP you do with jpegs is fundamentally compromised compared to doing the same work with RAW files. Sorry, I cant make it any nicer!

    Keith,

Thank you for explaining very clearly how DSS saves images.

    Phil,

Thanks again for your replies. But sorry...you were not very clear. Which is why I asked more follow up questions. You did very clearly point out that the 'save as' image was really an 8-bit image in a 16-bit container. But nowhere in your replies did you mention what bit image the autosave.tif image was.

And just to quote you, "I thought I was very clear" when I said that I can't open the autosave.tif file because of a hardware problem, not a software problem. Neither Photoshop, or IrfanView, will open the file because I don't have enough memory (RAM) in my computer (or at least that is what both programs are telling me).

So if I'm to extrapolate an answer from all your replies as to "why am I losing color in all my DDS final images" (the reason I originally started this thread). Am I correct in saying that the reason I'm losing the color in my stacked images is because my useless good for nothing jpegs aren't stacking correctly? If so, I can't wait to install the hack for my camera that will allow me save images in RAW format. Then I'll finally be able to see my stacked images with all their natural colors intact.

No it happens to me too.

As if you did not have enough trouble, that won't help. CHDK has its own raw format that is actually labeled .cr2 but is something entirely different. But, CHDK is open source so you can always write your own conversions

    ARGH!!!

LOL...I'm just compounding problems right and left here.

It's starting to sound like I should just put off getting into this aspect of astrophotography until I can get a decent camera. But that opens up a whole new can of worms...which one to get? Of course, my first option would be the Canon 60Da. But being unemployed and broke, that would be a long shot. So I have a major juggling act to do between price/performance. I don't want to spend any more than I have to, but at the same time, I don't want to buy a camera that will need to be replaced as soon as I start working again? Oh well, time to start reading through the camera forums to help me narrow down my decision.

Thanks for all the replies to my questions. I'll be back when I have tools more equipped for the job.

For a bang-for-buck DSLR for AP, a used 450D/XSi is very hard to beat. Don't know if that would be in budget, but it has all the essential features and you can go a long long way with one of those, especially if you do not have excessive ambient temperatures in summer. They are also very easy to self-mod and will capture a little more Ha than a 60Da.
Can be fully computer controlled via free software too. With the right software you can also do good planetary work via LiveView capture.

    Phil,

    Thanks for the tip!

I'll have to check that 450D/XSi out. It sounds like everything I'm looking for, and if I can get one for a reasonable price, even better!

I just did a little searching around the internet, and the Canon 450D/XSi looks very promising.

Is there any important features I'd be giving up buying a camera in this price range, compared to a more costly camera, or does this camera have all the important features I'll need for astrophotography both now, and in the future?

It has all of the features you need for AP. It is also quite light in weight which is a good thing.
The main issues that can only be solved by spending a lot more money are:

Like most non pro/top end prosumer DSLRs it is not fully weather sealed, so keep an eye on dew (never had a problem myself with this but obviously it depends on your local climate)

Long exposures (north of 5 minutes) at high ISO 800 upwards can get a little noisy BUT this is highly temperature dependant.

IF possible it is best to run DSLRs for AP from an AC adapter rather batteries for a variety of reasons. The Canon AC adaptor is ridculously expensive but good third party ones are available.

It is also massively easier to do AP with a DSLR if you can attach it to a laptop via USB and control it from the laptop.

From a modded 450D the next REAL step up in quality would come from a cooled mono CCD with an 8mp sensor and filters. This would be in the low-mid $k's...

A 450D DSLR body on EBay goes for $200-$260 and indeed looks like a great choice to start with. If you have a DSLR already I would practice with it first until I knew how everything worked and knew exactly what limits you in achieving the results that you want. It looks like you are still in the learning process. Regarding the camera, I suspect that the dark current (sensor heat) on my 350D will soon become the most limiting factor for me. Eliminating that is best done getting a CCD or a higher end Canon such as a 60DA. So, if the 450D is somewhat comparable, don't assume that it will be the camera that you will use forever.
