This is a basic "stretch" curve. The software is GIMP, since I don't have Photoshop, but the principle is the same. The steep part of the "S"-shaped curve causes that part of the dynamic range to be "stretched", hence the name. A flat curve gives low contrast; a steep curve gives high contrast.

Thanks for helping with the explanation of "stretching" as it pertains to the images curve, and for the diagram illustrating it. I'm starting to understand more how this stuff works.

Assuming you have the full version of PS that can do 16-bit curves...
In DSS do not make ANY changes, simply create the stacked image. dss will create a file called autosave.tif. Do not use the file save as... Command in dss, it has a nasty bug in it which will rend your image into 8-bits...
Always use the autosave.tif file, never make any changes to the image in DSS and you are giving the best possible data to PS (or whatever post processing package you are using).

Saving the DSS image with the data embedded instead of applied did preserve the color from the original images. But no amount of 'stretching' that I tried so far on the 'embedded' image gives me anywhere near the detail that I got in my image as when I saved it from DSS with the data 'applied'. Looks like I need a little more practice before I'll be good at this.

    Thank you,

    Mark,

The method I mentioned is the one Tony Hellas presented last year in one of his monthly Astrophotography Articles in Astronomy Magazine. The point on the right side should be increased almost to the top but be a little lower than the peak. The peak should almost touch the top. The purpose of lowering the right side and not maximizing the peak is to help keep from clipping and loosing information.

As you can tell from the responses, there is no one way to strech an image. As Paul said, there are a lot of excellent videos on the internet. Also, keep in mind that stretching is only one step in the process of "developing" your image.

    Phil Leigh,

I'll try out the autosave.tif file created by DSS to see what kind of results I get.

I checked my 'save as' file from DSS and it's a 16-bit file, not an 8-bit file. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with this, but my camera, in it's stock configuration, only saves photos in jpg format. I plan on installing CHDK to give me the capability to save photos in RAW format. From what I've read, this should help improve my images since there won't be any compression of the image.

    Thanks for the tip!

    Phil,

Just a quick update on my autosave.tif processing attempts...Photoshop says it can't open the autosave.tif image because I don't have enough memory (RAM). I thought my aging specs would catch up to me eventually using these photo editing programs. I only have 2 GB of memory (DDR400) in an aging computer (Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (2.20GHz) processor). Unemployed with no money to upgrade. :0(

Oh well, I'll just keep taking photos, and worry about in depth processing later I guess.

    Thanks again for the help!

No it isnt.. Its 8 bit data within a 16 bit wrapper... Thats the bug!

If you cant open the autosave.tif file... The ONLY file that DSS creates that has all of your data in it!... Then download one of the many free utilities from the net such as Irfanviewthat can open the autosave.tif file and save it as a 16-bit tif file without loss of information.

If you are shooting jpeg then all of this is meaningless as your files are already broken! Jpeg is useless for AP except in very specific circumstances.

Default Re: Why am I losing color in all my DeepSkyStacker final images?

    Phil,

You lost me a bit concerning saved images in DSS...In post #13 you give the impression that the 'bug' was only in the 'save as' command (where it saves an 8-bit image in a 16-bit container), and instructed me to always use the autosave.tif file in my image processing. But in post #19 you recommend downloading a utility called Irfanview to open the autosave.tif in, and then save it as a 16-bit tif file. Are you saying that whether I 'save as' in DSS or use the autosave.tif image, both of them are actually only 8-bit images, and need to be converted to 16-bit? The reason I ask is because if the autosave.tif file is already a 16-bit image, why open it in another program just to save it in the same format? Or are you saying that the autosave.tif file is also an 8-bit image...just a better 8-bit image to use for post processing?

As for your 'Useless' statement...There is such a thing as degrees of usefullness. I know the jpegs I'm using right now are not going to give me the 'best' results, or maybe not even 'good' results. But to suggest that jpegs, or broken files, are utterly useless for post processing is just insane! Any file can be edited, or processed, to achieve better results. Will I get the same results as with an unbroken file, no. But that doesn't mean that processing a broken file is totally without merit. So no, it is not meaningless. Just not the 'best' or 'ideal' image to use.

...Hopefully next week I'll be shooting RAW images though!

    Mark :0)
