OK. In AT, in the "solver" pane you will see a parameter entry for "Backend.cfg" which points to a configuration file in a folder; mine points to "/etc/astrometry/backend.cfg"
    This equates to c:\cygwin\etc\astrometry\backend.cfg.

This text file (which must be edited in Notepad!) contains various instructions for the solver engine - which I suggest you do not change. Importantly, it has an entry that tells the solver engine where the indexes are located...

my backend.cfg file has this entry:

    # In which directories should we search for indices?
    add_path /usr/share/astrometry/data

    This path equates to c:\cygwin\usr\share\astrometry\data.

AT will (by default) try and use any/all files in the above file location whose names starts with "Index" as indices.

Hopefully this will be enough to get you going?

I have tried two more times since my previous post, even tried installing AT directly off the root directory...

I have tried to install 0.2.10.3 and 0.3.0.0 and results are exactly the same, the C:\cygwin\usr\share\Astrometry\data directory is always missing, actually its just the \astrometry\data directory that is missing, C:\cygwin\usr\share\ part is there in each installation...

I'm totally baffled... Installing AT on the PC was a cinch compared to this, it came up without any problems and has worked great from the first resolve... This install on the laptop is a nightmare!!!
This happened to me as well.

What seemed to work was to deinstall astrotortilla and leave the cygwin directory in place. Then I went back and did a reinstall from the astrotortilla site and reinstalled. If the directory where you put the index files doesn't exist then it didn't install the astrometry piece of the software. For some reason it picks it up on the second try. I deinstalled just the astrotortilla off my PC first.

I did this a bunch of times trying to figure out another problem. It seemed to catch astrometry on the second install. I think that after I got the Cygwin pieces on my laptop, I didn't bother with selecting a second mirror site because the missing astrometry piece is in the astrotortilla kit.

It was a ridiculously difficult installation on my windows 7 64 bit machine. I still get an occupied memory space error when i try to solve a second photo, and then I just keep trying a couple more times and then it solves. I installed it on a machine with the Vista operating system and it works every time on it. Now I am running astrotortilla in vista compatible mode and it gets the occupied memory space error a lot less often.

Index 4008 seems to work for photos from my 8se and photos from my ES 102 scope which makes no sense to me.

I have no problem installing and running it on two very different Win 7 64 machines... very odd.

Unfortunately, the install complexity arises because this application was developed to run on Unix (hence the Cygwin dependency) and then "ported" to Windows...

To be honest, it is no different to quite a few similar *nix-ported applications in this respect (there are lots with Python dependencies for example). Is it perfect - no; does it work - yes; is it free - yes.

I believe that the developers are working on a more sophisticated Windows install and GUI...

Nope... The mystery deepens, the install is not creating the \astrometry\backend.cfg folders in the C:\cygwin\etc\ directory...

A global search of the C drive for backend.cfg finds nothing, it is never being created apparently...

well, if you have no backend.cfg file then I would expect AT to throw an error... I've just checke both of my machines and it is in the same place on both.
Without this file it won't be able to solve anything...
I think that backend.cfg is an astrometry.net file not an AT file, so it should be created when cygwin is installed.
The most likely cause is failing to select a mirror site when doing the cygwin install...

You could alwys try the brute force method... Copy the entire c:\cygwin folder structure from your working machine to the other machine...

One more thing I just remembered.. When you do the AT install, install it into c:\astrotortilla NOT c:\program files( the default)... There's some strange bug that stops it working from that location under Win7 ... It's something to do with the fact that the C:\program files is normally write protected from applications for good safety reasons but the AT ini file needs to be writeable by AT. So it needs to go somewhere that is writeable.

This is all because AT is not a "properly engineered" windows program!

Uninstall cygwin and AT then reinstall but choose a different install folder ( save your index files somewhere first!).
    try that...
Cygwin will still end up in c:\cygwin which is fine.

Yes, I have done all as you suggest with the exception of a bulk copying from the machine that is working to the machine that won't install correctly...

At the moment I am doing a defrag on the Hd of the Laptop even though it was done a week ago as scheduled maintenance... I have done the install and removal sequence 4 times now and still no joy on creating the backend.cfg file and directories...

    Very strange and confusing....
