    Default Registax 6 alignment problem

I am a newbie to Registax so please bear with my ignorance. Recently I used my CHDKed Canon to take a series of jpeg with 1 second exposure @ ISO3200. I tried to stack them with Registax and had problem on alignment. The result look like this:

I have "accidentally" made another set works:

The difference may be shorter exposure time. The 1st set has an average alignpoint movement of about 42 pixels, and the 2nd set of about 32 pixels. These are beyond what I can set the "max Alignpoint movement" (max at 30). I suspect this is the reason that I cannot get them aligned.

I will really appreciate someone to point me to the right direction to solve this. The files for your testing is here:

Registax works best for planetary and lunar images. It appears that you are trying to stack images with stars, and for this Deep Sky Stacker is better suited.

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply and new software to try. I will definitely try it.

However, I still wonder if large alignpoint movement was the problem. And why it worked the first time?

Also, it seemed the Registax 5 allows movement up to 500 pixels (??). Will that be my solution?

May be just as you said Registax is the wrong tool for the job. Thanks for more help!

Not too sure about movement with Registax, but I know that Deep Sky Stacker has "mosaic" mode within the stacking parameters that might be helpful if you were imaging on a non-motorized setup.

I may be mistaken but I believe the maximum movement is a configurable setting in Registax 6, not a set value. Certainly your first image didn't align correctly (or aligned on something other than the stars). For stellar imaging in Registax, you'd probably be best off selecting alignpoints manually. DeepSkyStacker is the preferred tool for the job, though.

The "max Alignpoint movement" IS a configurable parameter. However, it was maxed out at 30 so any larger number input will be reset back to 30.

The "Alignmentbox size" however can be set to 200. I don't know why they will search that far and yet limit to 30 max movement. ?? Certainly Registax is a freeware and has its quirk as many others, so it may be fixed later.

    Please read this carefully ...

REGISTAX is for stacking planetary images taken from video files. It is not designed for, or capable of, stacking/aligning star field images. For that you need Deep Sky Stacker(DSS).

Well...Registax will stack *anything* if you choose the points manually -- it's actually not all that smart about it. (I've actually stacked video frames of people before, just for kicks...you get really creepy/artistic results.) DeepSkyStacker, on the other hand, will have none of that nonsense and insists on round stars.

Thanks for the help. I tried DSS and it is promising. I also tried Registax 5 and it also works although I need to learn more to tweak it.

I have never thought about doing imaging due to cost of equipment and my XT8 wasn't for photo. However, after getting some help from CHDK and image processing, there maybe some good stuff enough for my appetite ATM.

Here is the C/2012 K5 after DSS stacking 29 photos:

The algorithms in Registax are designed to stack "surfaces" not "points".
Trying to help people here... Registax is for planetary, DSS is for other stuff.
