    Default Registax isn't working. Ideas?

Hello. So Registax 6 crashes and reads "out of memory" when I hit Align regardless of whether I try to stack 30 or 200 images. I'm running 64bit Windows 7 with 8gigs of ram and a quad core i7 and it happens with jpegs, bmps, and Tiff files.

Registax 5 doesn't have this issue, but it doesn't really seem to do anything. I stacked about 200 pictures of Jupiter successfully and the final image looked almost identical (no better, though) to the majority of the images I'd taken. What am I doing wrong?

how many alingn points did you select. try using between 15-50 and see if the issue is still there
had a similar issue with registax 6,did get the update which fixed it but using less algn points helped alot.

Hey I tried about 10 points and when I hit Stack, it crashed. Any idea why the end picture with registax 5 looks identical to most of the prestacked pictures?

Exactly how did you take the images?

Taking still images generally won't achieve much for planetary work. You need to shoot VIDEO and lots of it - from the thousands of frames you may get lucky enough to capture a few really good frames where the atmospherics are at a minimum. When these are stacked you can get great results.

With your T2i the BEST method by far is to use software such as BYE in "5x planetary mode" (1:1 resolution) and stack the resultant AVI video in Registax.

You won't need bias, dark or flats either with this method - at 1/25s exposure the thermal noise is minimal anyway. Assuming your sensor is clean, flats won't buy you much for planetary as they will mostly be dealing with vingetting which is at the edges of the frame whereas the planet will be in the centre...

Keep in mind also that after you stack your stacked image will look pretty much the same as your reference frame. Stacking allows you to apply wavelets, sharpen, etc, while keeping the noise in your image at a minimum. As far as taking stills, try taking video. I also have a Canon t2i, and I use a program called EOS Camera Movie Record to record video. It automatically saves in .avi format and the video is recorded at 30 fps. It really works quite well.

Try reducing the number of CPUs at the top of the Registax window. I had that problem and this made it go away.
