    Default M27 processing

    Hi!

    I guess I need your help... I have 12 light (ISO 1600) 30 sec each of M27.
Every time I try to stack them with DSS i get the pic I am attaching, that is totally unsuitable for post-processing.
    Any help?

    thank you...!

A couple of observations... everything is rather blue - are you using a CLS filter? Also, your stars - especially on the left - are not very round and focus is not exactly right either. This will all make stacking rather tricky.

What image format(type of file) are you using? - is it the Nikon RAW format?

yes, I had a cls filter on.
I'm stacking 16 bit TIFF files.
Yes, I know focus isn't perfect... but I don't think this is an issue at this level...

If the focus is good enough for DSS to stack, then it`s not an issue for now. Later, maybe. The issue for now is noise.

Are you able to take longer frames? If you are on an alt-az mount, probably not, but if you are on an equatorial mount, try 60 second frames. Also, try a lot more of them. You only have 6 minutes of data. I aim for an hour of data on any subject, and I have a faster scope.

Are you taking dark frames? If not, I strongly recommend them. Their purpose is to reduce noise.

You could also try reducing the ISO setting on the camera. Some cameras are pretty noisy at 1600 and up. Try shooting at 800 or 400.

There's a lot of noise there, but it also looks like something's blowing out the histogram. The sub looks fine to me.

    Thank you all!
After taking 20 subs (30 sec) I got a single shoot 120 secs at ISO 1600 (attached). I'm not autoguided, so it took a lot of photoshopping...
BTW, it seems to me that neither focus nor exposure are an issue here. There must be something in my settings or file format that doesn't work... Argh!M27.jpg
