Thanks Zombie. Just to let you all know the first steps with all the clone stamps were to remove all the bright stars and the galaxy following the "Advanced gradient removal" technique here. Then just processed as normal.

    Hello!

What a wonderful image to work with!

    I used/did:
    1) PS CS5
    a) autocolor - to make the background easier to process
    b) subtracted a layer with a gradient that resembled the backgground
    c) linear dodge - on duplicate layers, to brighten the galaxy
    d) Hue/saturation layer to remove blue cast to the right
    e) cropped and resized
    f) save image
There was still colour noise, so I reopened the image in PS and used/did:
    g) Topaz Denoise 5 to remove some noise - only a little
    h) now I had a red halo around the galaxy - selected that colour
    i) I subtracted the selection from the image

My aim was to show as much detail as possible in the large galaxy, to get a nice black background, and to make a nice composition including the smaller galaxies (at 2 o'clock and 7 o'clock).

    This is the result:

    Challenge 4 image-edited.jpg

I hope you like it !

    Very nice!

You were able to pull the detail and keep the gradients and noise under control. Congratulations!

This is my first challange object, probably not too good but its a shot.

    Crop Edges

Levels and Curves (1st Curve aggressive, pull it into data slightly then back down the clipping. 2nd Curve use eyedropper to select edge of DSO and select the black background, then adjust the anchor point at the edge of the DSO to brighten it and maintain a dark background)

Gradent X-Terminator (Magic Lasso the DSO with 20 Feather, and inverse selection. 1st run Medium Detail and Low Strength. Use magic wand to Tolerance 35 and select the black space, Magic Lasso Feather 20, hold alt key and grab DSO again, 2nd run Fine Detail and High Strength.)

    Set Black and White Points.

    Run Local Contrast Enhancement

Run Enhance DSO Reduce Stars (After it runs re-adjust curves by setting anchors for the edge of DSO again and the black space. Adjust the Black Space anchor down to darken the background and slightly lighten the DSO. Slight S-Curve)

    Fix Cosm Problems

    Increase Saturation

    Run Increase Star Color

    Final strectching

    Run Deep Space Noise Reduction

Smart Sharpen (Advanced settings, Adjust Sharpen Amount to 80 and Radius to 2.8. Adjust Shadow Fade Amount to 100, Adjust Highlight to 0-20)

    Run Less Crunchy More Fuzzy

I'm giving this a try. I'm a very beginner at processing. I don't know how to get the logs of what I did, but I will describe them.

    1. Went to curves in Photoshop CS5.1; used the auto feature (I always start from here).
    2. Adjusted red, green, blue, and levels curves to suit my taste and bring out as much color as possible.
    3. Saved a copy and went to Fitswork, because I don't know yet how to do all the really tough stuff in Photoshop.
    4. Ran automatic background gradient removal in Fitswork.
    5. Tweaked curves again to bring out more detail.
    6. Ran noise filter in Fitswork with 30, 3, and 30 as parameters.
    7. Went back in Photoshop and took a final look and saved as .jpg
    8. Went to paint and reduced the size to fit here, because, again, I cannot figure out how to do it in Photoshop.

That's it, and it is very basic processing. I have a lot to learn, but that is the point of this exercise, correct? I would like to try the other challenges too, if it is alright to go backwards to them. Maybe, I'll try some different things each time.

    Looks great John!

Yes please do go back and try the others. Be sure to read through the other attempts at the techniques used by the posters. It will help give you ideas to try. If you have questions just post them to the applicable challenge.

    Thanks for posting!

Just beginning to take DSO photos and do processing, so this is my first time trying a challenge. Feedback on result is welcome. Besides Photoshop CS5 I used StarTools, the Noel Carboni actions, the HLVG plugin for PS and the NeatImage plugin for PS.

A brief outline of the steps:

Develop, Wipe (deals with gradients), Contrast, Optimize in StarTools (in that order).
    In PhotoShop:
    - boost shadows using Curves then slide leftmost point in Levels to bring background back down a bit
    - Select dark regions using Select / Color Range then run NeatImage and decrease saturation to get rid of color casts
    - Run NeatImage again just on the red channel
    - Run HLVG to get rid of unwanted greens
    - play with color balance on DSO to taste
    - select reds in DSO, increase saturation (brings out detail in core and arms of galaxy)
    - select blues, play with color balance some more
    - soften stars using mild Blur / Gaussian Blur followed by lightening curve (just on bright stars)
    - run Filter / Noise / Reduce Noise on whole DSO (strength 8, detail 10)
    - scale image down by 30% or so
    - run Increase Star Color
    - do mild Local Contrast Enhancement on DSO
    - do mild noise reduction again

    Final result:
