    Looks great Arjun!

The gradient (lighter to darker area) in the background can be removed by a number of different methods. In fact there are specific 'actions' that can be purchased for photoshop to remove them.

Considering you don't normally do astrophotography processing, your results are pretty darn good! Congrats!

Here's some of the more popular ones:

    GradientXterminator ($)
    GradientXTerminator

    Noel Carboni's Actions: ($)
Astronomy Tools Actions Set by ProDigital Software

Here's a free method to use.
    Fleming Astrophotography

Or you can try this. (this is the method I used before I switched to StarTools which has a great removal tool built in)

Here's my shot at it. Should of read the instructions better on documenting my processing sorry.

1- In CCDStack2 converteded image to separatete red, green and blue images
2- Normalized background in each image in CCDStack2
    3- A quick data rejection in CCDStack2.
4- Used GradientXterminator plug-in in Photoshop on each image.
5- Combined images back into RGB in CCDStack2.
6- Normalized background of RGB image one more time in CCDStack2.
7- Back to Photoshop, set white and black points.
    8- Curves
9- Checked and adjusted color balance. Doesn't look like but I did. LOL
    10- Curves.
    11- contrast with curves.
    12- Gaussian Blur.

Nothing to fancy tonight, need to work on it some more yet. But it's a start.

    Thanks and CS,
    Tom.

Here's my attempt at this one using PixInsight and PS CS5. Jumping back and forth between the two made it almost impossible to keep track of every adjustment made but here are "most" of the actions I did.

Opened image in PI and did a few iterations of DBE (Dynamic Background Extraction) to help with the gradient.
Did one iteration of ATrousWavelet Transform to greatly reduce the background noise.
Did a slight histogram transformation and saved file.
Opened file in PS CS5 and ran Gradient Xterminator. Saved file.
Opened in PI and did a full histogram transformation and colour calibration.
Did 3 layers and 1 iterations of HDR Multiscale Transform to bring out more detail in the galaxy.
Did a masked saturation boost and a very light noise reduction with ACDNR.
Opened file in PS and adjusted curves and levels slightly.
Ran Carboni's action "Remove colour blotching"
Ran plug-in "Neat Image" to further remove background noise.
    Did slight adjustment with levels.

Here's the tricky part, adjusting for coma. I tried the lens correction in PS and it did help but not to the degree I liked.
Made a copy of the image and set the blending mode to darken.
Selected the move tool and zoomed in on the upper left corner and using the direction buttons, corrected the stars. This made the whole image go completely out of wack so I created a layer mask in the copy layer and selected the brush tool.
Using the brush tool I "painted" over the parts that I did not want changed. This returned the painted over parts to normal.
Flattened the image and repeated it with the left hand lower corner to reduce the coma there.
Used a star spike brush created with Annie's actions and made the original star spikes look much better.
Ran Carboni's action "Increase Star Colour"
Used the lasso tool and selected some of the spiked stars. Did an unsharp mask on the selected stars.
The other stars in the background were not as bright as before so did an unsharp mask to the whole image at 0.5 pixels.
This created the dark circles around the stars in the galaxy but made the image as a whole look better to me.

I'm sure I could have done a much better job with the coma but I was starting to spend more time on this one than I do my own images.

I just took a look at the images here on my work PC and they look NOTHING like they do on my Macbook Pro!!!!!
I even looked at the images on another PC and my image(s) really look like crap!

    Lonnie,

You bring up a good point with this comment. I have been checking my images and also my website look on various computers. One thing I have thought long and hard on lately has been looking into calibrating my monitors accurately. Would love to hear others thoughts on best method of calibrating a monitor...think the subject would make a good sticky post. A good topic or thread to add to astrophotography image processing section. I would love to see a thread on this subject matter.
