Keith, Thank you for the paint.net suggestion. Very cool and simple! I am playing with the image already and learning fast.

Jump in there Chuck and experiment. When I started that's what I did...and still do. This image is really pushing me to look at some tools I rarely use in Photo Shop. BTW nice one fogfire. I've looked at lightroom. My father-in-law uses it. They have a trial download I may take advantage of.

I'm working on a new version and noticed something I didn't see before..that being a satellite trail. Anyways, I really like the challenge and the images you guys have all done.. thank you.

    Ken,

Great job with Lightroom! I've got a couple new Challenges up my sleeve that are more complex however I want to keep the first bunch relatively easy so people who are just starting out can play with out it being too frustrating.

I guess the 'nice' thing with my images are they are for the most part 'noisy', a bit 'soft' and have coma so it gives everyone a chance to play with those tools. Also the first few haven't had a lot of data so you have to work a bit to pull in the details. Now that I have the new mount (Atlas EQ-g) I will start capturing more data so I can post challenges of less familiar objects.

    Thanks again for posting!
    Gordon

Gordon, I have to say that I am enjoying these challenges immensely. Both of then, so far, I have thought "OMG" when I saw the starting image. But in each case, I was able to learn some new techniques to deal with the challenges. Seeing what issues other folks tackle and how they deal with them is very valuable.

I am looking forward (with some trepidation!) to more.

    I haven't upgraded to LR 4 yet.
Lightroom is a very different beast than everything else like PS. The edits don't change the original bits.. they are Nondestructive..and can be changed continuously not just applied in steps.

I can make a virtual copy of the image and work two different ways of the same core image.. also I sit there and live time play with the sliders for all the settings that shift the histogram, play with noise etc so can try dozens of combinations in a couple of minutes that would take me longer in PS. I can always take what I have done and move it to PS if I need.

This time I found a short cut to pulling out the data in the shadows. I just pump the exposure up until I see the DSO in the bright fog this stretches the histogram. Then I increase the Black level setting until be background nears black. Then I can start playing the the fine points and the color levels etc.

    Thanks for the images

    Chuck,

GIMP is a great starting point as you can begin to learn the terminology (levels, curves, black point, masking etc etc) However do spend some time researching the different "pay for" software before you spend any money. There's quite a few out there and most have a significant learning curve. Photo Shop seems to have the most following, however it is one of the more expensive ones. Pixinsite is very popular however the terminology is for the most part completely different than anything I had ever used. I started using StarTools about a month or so ago and found it to be one of the easier ones to learn. It's price is less expensive than the others and will do many of the things that PS require a 'plug in' for. Most of the "tools" are preset and will at least give you a good starting point. Adjusting the presets will let you fine tune it for the desired end result. Since it's fairly new there aren't a lot of tutorials but I found it to be pretty easy to learn just by trial and error.
Anyway my point about all this is to take some time to try things out before you jump in and buy anything (most have a free trial download). Once you make the purchase it's best to hang with it and learn as much as you can about it, otherwise you could easily find yourself jumping between programs and having to re-learn all of the 'tricks' again. That can get real expensive real fast.

Give GIMP or Paint.net a try and see what you can do with the Challenge. It really doesn't matter how 'good' or 'bad' YOU think it is. Post it and let some folks chime in with help. That's what the "Challenge" is all about.
    Gordon

This time I found a short cut to pulling out the data in the shadows. I just pump the exposure up until I see the DSO in the bright fog this stretches the histogram. Then I increase the Black level setting until be background nears black. Then I can start playing the the fine points and the color levels etc.

    Thanks for the images
Ken, a trick I learned in PS is to 'copy' a new layer for each process you are going to attempt, do the process and when you are happy with it 'copy' a new layer from it. This way you can go back if you need to 'undo' a process that maybe didn't end up the way you wanted it to. I rename the new layer for the process I will be using and don't 'merge' layers until the very end of the workflow. (Some of "Annies" actions wont work with this method but you can figure them out and work around it if need be).

My granddaughter uses Lightroom for her photography stuff and I've watched over her shoulder when she's doing processing. Your right, it's different.
