Hi Dalton [I work in the Microsoft community doing work for partners and vendors etc].. last time I checked.. Microsoft has extended the support period for XP several times support for XP SP3 ends in 2014. So that people are now using it and getting security updates a decade later. Do you own any other product that does that? Heck I can't even upgrade the hand controller on Celestron Nexstar 8 from 10 years ago. How is the Linux support for Distros released in 2001? Or Mac PowerPC OS?

I haven't yet played with the Win 8 Beta.. I like the UI on the phone.. but not sure about it on the PC either .. but it is my understanding that the classic Desktop is still there and if you look at the effort made to keep DOS support for years and XP compatibility under Windows 7 I doubt that anyone is going to force you to a tablet.. and support for Windows 7 will not end probably in this decade..so no rush no forcing

I for one, think a tablet Windows with Stellarium or Cartes du Ciel on it running my scope purely by touch.. is a cool idea..

    Ken,

That is good to know you work in the community. I am currently using XP and Win 7 ultimate oem editions on my setups.....they are stable.....I am bit of old school when it comes to computers, been using them since late 70's.....been building custom gaming and video editing rigs for past 15 years along with computer repair/installation as one of several side businesses helps to pay for the Astro hobby, though my full time job has kept me way too busy these past few years, and does not look to be slowing down...I have found over past few years I have limited my computer work on side to select few, to maintain my sanity and have some spare time for my own projects.

Tablets do have their pluses...just worried from initial read on the win8 direction they seem to be going is to obsolete regular pc owners.....the technology of tablets and such is wonderful, but I enjoy sitting in front my full tower computer with 28" monitor and accessory monitors using my current comfy and reliable setups...win 8 initial preview seems to be aimed more for the tablet community(this doesn't sit well with me being pc fanatic, do hope they keep pc's in loop for long time to come, obviosuly the big market now is portable devices)...

When I do computer support over phone, I can recite anything XP off top of head, it was bit frustrating when things began to change with new OS releases(took some time to relearn)....Win7 64 and XPSP3 have been quite reliable and stable....I will keep stock of my win7 discs for some time, I am very careful before I accept a new OS...

For AP purposes and my use of pc these OS systems have served me well.

Nope, never assumed anyone was not a student, just felt the need to clarify your statement about purchasing student/teacher software since I have personally seen someone right here on this board talk about purchasing that kind of software when they were not entitled to it.

If you are indeed a student/teacher, you would have to be a little slow NOT to take advantage of the offers. But when you suggest people get the student discount and then right below that in the same thread someone start talking about "alternative" methods, you could (or at least I could) see where this was leaning.

    Jeff,
I did support as a Microsoft Employee for Windows 386 and Windows 3.X Yikes...!!

I am on home built machine, my wife has one with a pretty red case and my daughter has one with a pretty pink case.. built mostly from older parts

I am there with you... Supporting my mom.. on the phone is an experience.. thank goodness from the remote desktop technologies!!!!

PC will be around of a long time.. but face it that Ipad thing did better than I expected... at $600 for a glorified smart phone and $400 a year for data.. I though it was too specialized.

Even though I can buy a car that runs for 5 years without a tune up doesn't mean I can't also build one from scratch still.. the note book or tablet will never feed the needs of the gamers who are bleeding edge they will keep the full PC alive for years.. too much money there.. even with XBOX and PS2

    I don't.

I got PS5 free with my first digital camera, years ago. I used it until my latest computer upgrade, when it stopped working. I switched to GIMP. For some functions, I use Paint.Net.

Eventually, I may pay for photo software if I find something I like at a reasonable price. Maybe that $69 Chinese product.

Please note that the Adobe Educational Purchase scheme is very different to (for example) the Microsoft one.
As far as the Adobe scheme is concerned, the PURCHASER has to meet certain criteria. This is verified by Adobe's third party agents. There is no further distraint on the purchaser beyond the licensing conditions that apply to the normal, non-discounted purchase. My wife meets the criteria and if she lost her job the day after purchasing the software, both she AND I would still be allowed to use the software in perpetuity. I have checked this all with Adobe.

I'm just posting this for clarification.
