    Ken, Kevin,

Great work! That upper left hand side is kicking my butt. I'll give it another shot tonight after work. Thanks -

    Thanks Rob!

I was hoping sharing methods on one image might give others a chance to see what others use for methods to post process.

    Hi Lonnie!

The upper left was a bear! I'm in a 5-6 bortle area and get lots of LP so seeing how others work at getting those gradients out of the image is fun.

Looking forward to seeing your results!

Would it be possible (or make sense) to have a companion thread stickied along with the competition thread to deal with questions regarding processing the image. As a processing noob, I may have questions, but don't really want to clog up the main thread with basic processing questions.

Or should we be saving the questions for after the "competition" closes? As everyone is posting their steps/log, though, how serious is the actual competition?

    Thanks.
    Mike

    Hi Mike!

Go ahead and post your questions here if they are related to previous posts in this thread or about a particular method someone here uses, (that's why we started it), and as far as a 'competition', it's really not. It more of a "Challenge" so we can all learn more.

    Hi Dan!

    I fixed your post.

Normally I don't get to crazy with the sharpen tools. If I remember correctly I used the following in my post processing:

    PS CS2 "Smart Sharpen tool"

    Shadow, fade 80%
    Highlight, 20%
    Power, 60 to 70%

    Thanks for posting!
    Gordon

Thanks for the tip! I liked the sharpness of the surrounding stars though. Just the nebulosity was too sharp.

One of Noel Carboni's Astronomy Actions is "Select Brighter Stars". You can use that tool to sharpen just the stars, or if you needed to you could do a "invert selection" and sharpen just the nebula. It works really well.

I've found Carboni's Actions to be a great investment really good time saver for a lot of the images I have taken.

    Tough one!! The more I tried to tame the left corner, the more data I seemed to lose. Thought I better quit while I was ahead. Heres what I came up with;

    Open in CS5
    Layer 1 - levels
    Layer 2 - Levels
    Layer 3 - Curves
    Layer 4 - Levels
    Layer 5 - Curves
    Flatten image
    Annie's Actions
    Gradient removal
    New Layer 1 - Levels
    New Layer 2 - Curves
    Flatten Image
    Unsharp Mask
    Color Match
    Save as JPEG
    Open with Mac previewer
    Sharpness adjusted
    Small tweak with Exposure
    Resize and save
(Hope I didn't forget anything. Closed PS before looking at history.)
