Arrow vendor posting Star tools I

This is a very challenging data set. Apart from the bad light pollution and very soft detail (probably atmospheric turbulence and being so low at the horizon), the image really suffers from the lack of flats and darks - there is a good few of artifacts and dust donuts, and processing (see below) revealed amp glow. It appears the image was not dithered while recording, a field flattener was not used and tracking was not sufficiently accurate to prevent slightly elongated stars. I'm also going out on a limb here and guess that the individual frames were not shot in RAW, but in JPEG, making matters worse, as well as preventing the use of (useful) deconvolution.

All in all a very challenging image!

    Too see if it was salvageable, I put it through StarTools 1.2;

    --- Bin
Binning to fit image in 900x900 max allowed size, while availing of noise reduction from the binned pixels.
Parameter [Scale] set to [(scale/noise reduction 35.23%)/(805.70%)/(+3.01 bits)]
    --- Crop
    Getting rid of stacking artifacts.
Parameter [X1] set to [2 pixels]
Parameter [Y1] set to [2 pixels]
    Parameter [X2] set to [898 pixels (-2)]
    Parameter [Y2] set to [586 pixels (-13)]
    --- Wipe
    Removing LP and vignetting.
Vignetting preset, created mask with dust donut, then inverted it (e.g. selecting everything but the dust donut).
Parameter [Dark Anomaly Filter] set to [3 pixels]
    --- Develop
    Basic stretching.
Parameter [Noise Suppression] set to [100 %]
Parameter [Digital Development] set to [61.87 %]
    --- Heal
    Healing out dust donut
    Default parameters
    --- Contrast
Large to medium scale dynamic range optimization.
Parameter [Dark Anomaly Filter] set to [21 pixels]
    --- Life
    'Isolate' preset.

The result is not great, but M31 is at least recognizable as such, appearing reminiscent of what you would see visually through a powerful enough telescope.

    Cheers,

    Ivo
