Well, there is some decent reading to be had regarding DSS. The FAQ there is pretty useful and I learned a good deal from it:

    DeepSkyStacker FAQ

There is also a tutorial located here:

My Quick DeepSkyStacker Tutorial Flintstone Stargazing

Although this is more oriented towards photographs with stars in them. Speaking of which I believe DSS is pretty much only used for deep sky objects as it detects stars as it's method of lining up images. At any rate for planetary images you may want to give registax a try if you haven't already. I know it extracted a pretty nice image from my avi video. Not sure how it does on individual images though. It doesn't need stars to align images either.

    RegiStax- Free image processing software

Edit: You don't want to make copies of files and stack them since that would not introduce any new signal into the stack all it would accomplish is weighting the signal of the copied image more compared to the ones that have not been copied. You need to start with a stack of unique images so registax can extract the signal out of the noise. Basically all I had to do was chuck my avi into registax and hit align. It did everything else. Then when you get an image out of it you will want to adjust the brightness and contract and probably the wavelets for sharpening. Pretty easy to use program. Also, I will just mention I got my telescope less than a month ago and am not an expert on this, so this is just the basic information I know. If you want to see my images (especially the Jupiter one for reference since that is the only one I used registax on) they are located here:

My astro-buddy Terry Belia uses Deep Sky Stacker extensively- he is a whiz bang with DSS. Contact him at his web site-- he is a really nice guy and will help you.

Thanks for the help. I think its time to at least start thinking seriously about astrophotography. I can't think of a better way to start than by working on shots I've already taken.

Wow. What a blast from the past this thread is.
I decided that astrophotography will wait. I still have a long way to go with visual astronomy and really enjoy it. With work and school and a complete change in academic direction I'm just going to bide my time and work visually.
    -Thanks

Don't feel bad...I've been trying to use DSS for over a year now....I gave up! I read the FAQ's, read the tutorial....F'GETABOUTIT!!!

Can't get Registax to work, either!

Either I'm a complete moron, or something's just plain wrong.

Nick, I actually found a link to my website from this thread and thought I'd toss in a update to it. When you decide to get into astrophotography, drop me an email via my website and I'll be glad to work with you.

Chris, the same for you as well. DSS is actually pretty easy to use. Just a matter of getting the settings selected properly, then letting the program stack your images. Let me know if I can help.

    Hi Terry,

I certainly appreciate the help. Unfortunately, I might have issues because most of my photography is "Solar" photography.

Many people tell me that DSS or other programs don't work well with planetary or solar shots? I have no idea.....Honestly, I just gave up. Sick of trying to use DSS for over a YEAR with no luck.. I just find it odd.

I keep getting "Out of memory" error codes, or "Can only stack ONE image of Five"????????? What kind of crap is that.....??? LOL

    Just flustered, I guess!
