    Default Layer Masks

After I completed acquisition of M 20 last night, I decided to shoot just a few of the Lagoon nebula. Really, it's not bad. However, as I process it, the center becomes awash with white from the star brightness. I remember Austin mentioning a while back that a layer mask was the key to keeping the core tamed.

I have found a tutorial or two online, but they seem to leave the details out. One tutorial had me make a negative which is supposed to keep the brightest parts of an image intact while processing is ongoing. Unfortunately, these tutorials just don't provide enough of information on what to do next. I ended up with a couple of layers, one a negative, with no idea what to do next.

Would any of you be kind enough to point me to a good tutorial on layer masking? Pete provided great site, but I would like another.

    Thanks for the consideration.

Thanks Jeff. I'll play with it and see what I can do. There's a book dedicated to using PS for astophotography, and it's not Lodriguss's book. I just can't think of the name of it to save my life.

    Blaise,

The best training for photoshop is Adam Blocks Making every Pix count latest version two first editions is what I own. It is hands on with Adam Block instructing with live video shot of his desktop as he narrates you through all the post procesing step by step. It is excellent training for photoshop very hard to beat since you get first hand view of processing in action. A must have investment if you are into photoshop.
