    Default M27: 07/09/10

    All--

Here is M27 from last night, July 9, 2010. This image product was produced without darks because I spent all night collecting light!

Since there will be more processing (dark addition) to the image (plus whatever processing you might suggest), I have not put it on my web site, yet.

The idea behind capturing at multiple ISO settings was to promote nebulosity detail at low ISO and get more stars at high ISO. I believe this worked. At ISO 400, there is noticeably more nebulosity detail, while at ISO 1600 there are noticeably more stars. I don't know what the ideal mix may be and I don't know how long the sub-exposures should be, nor the total number. (More = better, I imagine.)

Note 14 Vul in the upper left corner and the five little stars trailing diagonally off on the lower right.

    Date: 07/09/10
    Name: M27 (NGC 6853 - Dumbbell Nebula)
    Camera: Nikon D700, prime focus
    Mount: Atlas EQ-G
    Telescope: AT8IN
    Exposures . . .

    10 - 90 seconds at ISO 800

    0 Darks

    Captured with ImagesPlus Camera Control.
Processed with ImagesPlus Processing; stretched, curves, and back ground smoothing and Nikon NX2; cropped, contrast and brightness, black point.

    Bill,

Very nice image! Glad to see you are able to get longer exposure time. You have been rapidly increasing exposure time lately that is good news and the results are showing it! Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing!

    Bill,

its' looking very good! How are you combining the individual processed FITS? I've got my mount off to Celestron for some work, which means I've got LOTS more time to play with the images I've already collected. Combing different exposures is on the "to-do" list and I'm more than happy to cheat off you.

    Thanks! John

    John and All--

I have to take some darks to calibrate with the images in this product.

John, I first tried processing the 400, 800, and 1600 ISO batches separately, then combining them in IP. The result was not what I expected. Kinda horrible.

Next, I merely lumped them all in together and worked on the result in DD and later in NX2. When I get the darks ready, that technique will not work, since darks and lights are supposed to be ISO correlated. I'll have to do some manual work in IP using the alignment utility.

Glad you like it at this stage.

That is a really nice one. The Dumbbell is more like a Jewel in that pic. I like it very much.
The AT seems to be performing really well, catches lots of photons and puts them in the right places, I see...
