Default QHY 183 vs ZWO ASI183... Which is better?

I am having a tough time deciding which camera is better. On the one hand, the QHY is 100.00 cheaper than the ZWO and it claims to provide...

"Anti-Amp Glow technology to significantly reduce typical CMOS amplifier glow to a minimum, allowing excellent calibration by subtracting a dark frame".
I have read that the ZWO183 has some issues with amp glow. I would assume the QHY would struggle with this too if it weren't for this advantage they claim.

As for the ZWO, it shows to have a peak QE of 84%, whereas the QHY shows to be 74%.

As far as I can tell, these are the only upsides/downsides when comparing the two. However, my knowledge of this is limited, so I am hoping someone can enlighten me to other potential differences that I am overlooking.

Any support would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Which color do you like?

Subtracting a dark frame IS anti-amp glow technology.

As far as I'm concerned, either cam will be excellent. But do not rely on my word alone.

I went with the QHY183C and I have been very happy with it. It has a heated window to prevent dew and frost which the ZWO does not.
Both cameras have the same exact Sony sensor, so they have the same QE (Quantum Efficiency), same number of pixels, same size of sensor, same size of pixels, etc, etc...
QHY came out with the ""Anti-Amp Glow technology" in it's drivers. ZWO followed suit and added it to their drivers several months later.

The only real differences are the amount of backfocus and and the dew heater for the window.
Later on ZWO came out with this external dew heater strip:

back focus distance 6.5mm for the zwo with 2 x usb hub., what is going with the qhy , 17.5 mm does it have a tilt ring on it ??

also it looks like they both have the same chip. one is a revamp , you can see the quant efficiency spec numbers are different slightly

I don't know where your getting your 74% from? Both cameras have the same Qe of 84%.
    https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com...83mc-pro-color
    https://www.qhyccd.com/index.php?m=c...catid=94&id=16

QHY has other options to remove the nose piece and replace it with different adapters reducing the backfocus.

Maybe qhy updated to the revamp chip aswell, i swear I came across an advert that showed 74 qe aswell, the chip was listed differently for the zwo example, imx 183 (xxxx)

Default Re: QHY 183 vs ZWO ASI183... Which is better?

I don't believe the IMX183 really has a QE of 84% although it is difficult to tell. Even if true it would mean only a peak QE of 84% rather than a QE about 84% across the spectrum.

One clue that ZWO is not correct is that they quote the same 84% peak QE for both the monochrome and for the OSC versions and that is just clearly wrong.

FLIR does testing at 525nm and on a monochrome camera got about 79% and that seems about right: https://www.flir.com/globalassets/di...iew2018-q1.pdf

It will be a somewhat worse for a OSC camera.

Either way, you'll have some "amp glow" and flats will be something which will make your life better.

ZWO is now handling the heating/dewing issue about the same as does QHY so that is not a big deal.

If QHY is cheaper, I'd probably go that way.

These CMOS sensors are SoC and that means that the functions and performance of the sensor will typically be the same from one camera to another with the "camera manufacturer" no providing mostly the case, the cooling, and the drivers. There are some variations on this in which camera manufacturers have figured out how to do some things which are likely not intended to be done by the sensor manufacturer but can still be done - and both QHY and ZWO have shown that they know how to do that.

One thing in favor of ZWO is that their programmer(s) seem to be very good. So the software drivers are apparently very clean code which makes it easier for other software manufacturers to work with them.

    FWIW.

I had the QHY183m, I liked the fact that it used a dovetail connection to the filter wheel instead of threaded. I used a OAG, find a star if you didn't like the camera orientation just rotate the camera separately.
