Default My First Image Post - M31

So I have been lurking and posting questions on this forum for some time, but have not posted an image. This has been partially because I have had a steep learning curve ... and of course a lot of clouds roll in whenever I have the time an energy to go to a dark site.

So on January 12th a miracle happened, the skies cleared, the wind died down and my wife and I made it to a relatively dark site near Navasota, TX and I took 3 good sets of images. M31 was the first image so here are some links to my new Astrobin site:

    https://astrob.in/full/389133/0/

    https://www.astrobin.com/389133/?nc=user

My set up is relatively minimal (inspired by the Minimalist Astrophotography thread):

    Canon 55-250mm stock lens
    Canon 1100d (T3)
    Backyard EOS
Celestron Nexstar SLT GoTo mount (Alt/Az)

    22 x 30 seconds subs
    3200 ISO
    f5.6

Stacked and stretched in DSS and GIMP.

This evening was sort of a test of concept evening to see what kind of images that I could capture under dark skies. Now that I know that this works, I will try to get more integration time, the next time I am out.

Thank you to all of you here who have put up with my questions and post your images that have inspired me to get started in this hobby.

    Jon

Congratulations Jon! Your tracking looks very good with round stars. Well done.

My first image didn't look nearly as nice as that. It was also captured with a NexStar mount and 30 sec exposures. In fact, I captured many Messier objects with that setup.

Look forward to your next image(s).

    Steve,

Sorry for the confusion, this is my first image that I did not feel embarrassed to post. I have lots of images with oval stars!

I like the Nexstar mount ... once I figured out how to work it!

    Thank you!

    I get it.

When I used the NexStar mount I had to look through all the images and throw out the ones where the stars weren't round. My yield of good images was usually in the 50-70% range which was always disheartening (because I was throwing away 30-50% of the images). When I tried imaging longer than 30 sec images I had a much lower "success" rate. Eventually I gave up and went to an equatorial mount.

Best of success with your setup. Hopefully it will perform better than mine did.

    Great job Jon!

I really like your minimalist approach. Amazing what you can do with your Nexstar mount!

What fl were you shooting at?

    30 second subs. Fine job!
