    Default Practicing on M78

Here is my latest effort at astrophotography. I was camping in the anza borrego desert which seems like Bortle 3. I managed 32x30” subs on my Sony a6000 pointing at M78.

I welcome any input from the veterans here. My suspicion is that I’ll need much longer subs to ge more detail.

Very nice! When you capture a faint, dark target with short subs, you need as many subs as possible. I captured this target with planetary camera, with hundreds of 30s subs. And my camera has lower read noise. Or you can try with 5-10min subs, lower ISO, the total eposure time over 2 hours.

good capture of the faint target, probably one of the most difficult targets to image ,you have a fair amount of noise ,did you use darks and flats ? it looks like you might have over stretched some of the data in the core ,the middle should be a blue colour i can see a hint in there, what scope do you have ?

Thanks for the input. I haven’t started using darks and flats yet. I am still struggling to get a handful of images without something going wrong

I’ll try to get more integration time next time.
