    Default Milky Way Panorama

We had another great night in central west NSW last night on our current road trip.

We have been staying in a town called West Wyalong. Fairly remote, about 400km west of Sydney.

Without a Moon, the landscapes are very dark. In some of my captures, I am timing the exposures so that headlights of tail lights of passing traffic provide some illumination. This panorama is stitched from 14 panels each captured in darkness absent of any artificial lights except for car headlights on the far horizon. The landscape is lit only by starlight. The wheat silos are in small rail sidings. The rail line only transports wheat. The rail lines are not being used at the moment as there is no wheat to transport so we only have to contend with the lights of passing traffic.

    Details
    Camera : Pentax K1
    Lens : Samyang 14mm f2.8 lens.
Each panel exposure is 30s f3.2 ISO 5000
Lens profile corrections applied to individual captures prior to stitching. All processing done in Lightroom.
    WestWyalong-0107-Pano1800p-200kB.jpg

    Enjoy

Yes, at first glance looks like a scene from the rural prairie of any North American farmland, then the LMC and SMC provide a jolt of inversion.

I really like it, great shot.

Fantastic shot Joe! I am trying the same thing but in the UK. Do you use the lens-camera nodal point when you are taking the panorama? Or is stitching software good even if nodal point is not used?
What software did you stitch the panorama? Did you use vertical portrait mode for your camera - each image is a vertical portrait of the sky with the camera vertical? Thanks. Mag

    Hi Mag,
Thanks for you comments. The original post said,"Lens profile corrections applied to individual captures prior to stitching. All processing done in Lightroom. "

All the processing including stitching was done in Lightroom. Lens profile corrections were applied to each image to remove distortion.

Yes 14 panels all in portrait format. No rotation about the nodal point, just on a tripod. I used to take great care to do nodal point rotation when I manually stitched terrestrial panos 10 years ago. The various tools that are available now make it much easier to capture in the field.

I was careful to avoid gradients and foreground lighting differences. The road is straight as an arrow for 10km to the north and for 20km south so you'll see headlight glow on two points on the horizon. I could not avoid distant headlights however I did not capture when vehicles were anywhere in the vicinity.

    Good luck with your project.

    Hi Clinton.
Sounds like a great adventure. If you want astro, you just have to be careful in the outback to stay well away from mine sites. They are dotted all over the country and are usually open cut with very very bright lighting. There is a gold mine is this area that pumps more light into the sky than the town does. Last night we were 50km south of the mine yet it was illuminating a large patch of low cloud and was brighter than West Wyalong just 20km away.
If you're ever coming over, get in touch. I've worked all over outback Australia and am happy to help.

    Cheers

    Joe
