Default Sombrerro at fl of 2,000

Here is a quick pass at some data I collected with the RC10 at its 'native' focal length of 2,000 while waiting on a new adaptor for the focal reducer. Its a pretty rough process and needs some work but I did not put too much into it considering it was just kind of a test I have some other data to go over later today on other objects too. One is a mystery object I picked up while putzing with the guiding paramaters

Anyhow the 'test' to see how the guiding would go with the oag at this long (for me) focal length. It did pretty well though there is some slight misshape in the stars which probably could be sorted out with deconv. But I am lazy. Still not bad for 10 minute subs. Also I was fine tuning the settings in SGP and PHD. Big change from the 60mm guide scope at a fl of 240mm!

This is about 10 frames with the lum filter at 600 seconds. This is uncropped for a good idea of the field of view!

I was also quite pleased at how well the flat worked considering what the raw data looked like. I don't know where all this dust came from but I will definatly clean it off before I put it back together with the FR. Here have a look at this flat

Flat example by Tom Whit, on Flickr

As always the images can be clicked on then clicked again to access the full resolution frames.

Comments questions and suggestions always welcomed!

    Thanks for looking!

Collimation looks good but your focus looks soft. That is a nice tight field, up close and personal.

you have a nice solid dust lane, looks like you might be sucking in too much lp ? one side of the frame is a little lighter in contrast ,i have the same problem cropped my galaxy images.

actually you can see it on the flat too, might be the flat that needs adjusting.forgeting the dust motes.

That's about as tight as that setup gets. At .56 as/pixel its kind of hard to get 'tight' stars. Also seeing can impact things a good deal. I am lucky to get an Hfr of less than 2.0 Like I said I could probably tighten it up some with a dose of deconvolution.

Actually I think it is an artifact of the camera itself as I have the same gradient with the APO which uses a different flat box. The blue filter really makes it jump out although not quite as bad as it is with the faster scope. Filters are 36mm

Looks pretty good -- the galaxy -- as if it were "switched on".

Ugly looking flat you got there.

So it's a full size image but looking at how large most stars are, it looks like it is cropped. Your scope should be able to show structure in the edge of the galaxy. If the focus was as good as it can be I wonder if this is just because the seeing was bad (which it is 90% of the time). Elsewhere I read that most of the time scopes with long focal length are useless for AP of DSOs; I think you could have got the same image with your APO and cropping it, under these seeing conditions. I don't mean to be diminish your result but that's just a fact of (AP) life. I think you already said that you were not able to get the focus any better probably due to seeing conditions. Nice effort though, and congrats with the OAG working so well.

camelhat might be on to something, maybe you need more integration . my fl is 1208mm and i spent an hr on the lum ,pixel size is 3.8um in bortl 5 zone and the details is slightly sharper then your 2000 fl atik 5.4 um?

did you sharpen the galaxy ?

is it beneficially to go a lower pixel size on a faster scope and crop zoom ? i've thaught about going to a slower scope with longer fl.

tom can we play with your raw galaxy image?

Sure I will put the raw stack up later tonight.

I have the focal reducer installed now still working out its spacing but hope to bring that as/px down to something more manageable like .7
