Default Close Encounter with the Horsehead & IC434

This was a quick 20 minutes of data taken of the Horsehead and IC434 nebulas Sunday night, 3/11/18. I was waiting for my prime target to cross the meridian and I was very excited to see how my alignment was working. I couldn't resist pulling the trigger on this target since it is the first time in about 3 years that I've trained the SCT on it.

I think I may have captured some light pollution source in the upper left hand corner of the image. In over-laying it on the wide field version from a few weeks ago, there is not a star in that region. I use a very tight connection with the SCT and the camera, so the light would have come from the front of the OTA. Based on the position of the scope, it may have been a light leak from the house to.

Attached is a crude overlay to demonstrate.

Despite the intrusion of the light pollution gradient, I do like the improved resolution of this area in the overlaid shot. That was tricky to make work because it was taken with the same camera using two different optical trains. The larger FOV used the ES102 at f/5.6 whereas the current work was done on the SCT at f/7.5. I tried erasing the gradient early in the process and I can make progress, but, the data is clipped in the extreme corner. I may opt to do a reprocess with the clipped regions being clipped to black in lieu of the current case.

For those who are curious, I did some rough scaling in Photoshop to align the two images. I then used Nebulosity to align, rotate and scale the images.
