    Default Witch Head Reprocess

There have been some beautiful Witch Head nebula images posted recently. It reminded me of my meager attempt at this dim nebula some time back.

Having just read and tested a new technique (new for me) for boosting faint nebula without pushing the stars [Posted in AP Image Processing Forum by FishLocater, i.e., Bill] I decided to test out the technique on my dim Witch Head image. The results are shown below in a side-by-side comparison with the original on the left and the "boosted" (using his second technique) on the right. I did a little additional Noise Reduction on the "boosted" image because, as expected, the boosting makes noise more evident.

This technique works very well at maintaining star size/brightness while boosting the faint nebula brightness. I didn't boost the image too much because the original data is quite noisy. However, I like the added nebulosity and overall brighter Witch Head that is evident in the boosted image. This technique is really quite easy to use, and, doesn't require a lot of "art" on the part of the user. I created a set of process icons to implement this technique, and, with these icons it only takes about 5 min to do the "boosting". Pretty slick!

Thanks for looking, and, thanks to Bill for taking the time to share this information.
