Default M13 - first DSO image

This is what I consider my first acceptable DSO image. It was from my first attempt at AP. I had a hodge-podge of subs with diffderent camera settings and exposure times. I fought some PA issues, dew, etc. No single session had more than 10 min of data. My StarTools results were loaded with noise.

So after reading on this forum about stacking multiple groups with DSS, thanks everyone who provided this insight, I ended up with 41 mins of total exposure time to process.

Finally, an acceptable result with StarTools. It still does not look all that "globular" to me, it has legs and looks more like a bug. But I was happy to get this image not loaded with noise. Any and all comments and suggestions welcomed.

    Clear skies,
    Steve

Very nice! If I may, there is a lot of detail hidden in the shadows that you can pull out. The histogram is nearly clipped in black, however, it isn't. Once you stretched it to draw out the detail, increase the contrast to tame the background noise and set your gray point.

You have some nice color going there. Very nice for a first image, heck it is just nice overall. If John is right, and he always is, there may be more data waiting to be pulled out of this one.

Thanks for your input. I am just learning the ropes in StarTools, so I will play around with it. I did use the Contrast module, but went with the defaults. Is that where I set the gray point?

Yeah, that is definitely a nice image!

I also use StarTools. Never bothered with gray point myself. You just get used to seeing how much you can DEVELOP after you initial routine of BIN-CROP-WIPE. I can often "develop" (or "stretch") the image to about 91% without too much noise taking over. Depends on whether I was imagining on a good night at a dark site or a bad night in the white zone where I live.

Then, when you get around to CONTRAST module -- just don't over do it. Same with LIFE module. Try to reduce noise without "clipping", ie, without deleting signal.
