    Default Old Eclipse photos

It's hard to believe that 47 years ago a friend and I drove to a little town in down east North Carolina and took photos of the eclipse on March 7, 1970. We were both members of the Greensboro Astronomy Club and fired up about the upcoming eclipse. All we had was a little refractor and an old Pentax camera. Neither of us knew diddly about AP but we were so excited to try to photograph the event anyway. Those were great times back then and we did pretty good too!IMG_2809.JPG

Hi Ed. These are some great shots. Here is my feeble attempt in 1964:
    Eclipse 1964.jpg
Equipment was a Tasco 3" Newtonian reflector, an eyepiece screw in solar filter (I was only 18 at the time, and didn't yet realize how dangerous this could be), a Kodak Hawkeye 620 camera held up to the eyepiece, and Verichrome Pan 620 film. I couldn't wait for the film to get back to the drugstore for the prints, to see if anything came out. Thanks for your post and excellent eclipse photos from the past Ed, good luck on the upcoming eclipse, and the best of regards.

Hi Marshall! I had forgotten about those little glass solar filters that you insert into the focuser. Mine was a .965 and I used it a couple of times but my heart was in observing Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Moon and a few bright DSO's. I also spent a great deal of time logging variable stars for the AAVSO back in the day! It's funny that once you get it in your blood it tends to follow you a lifetime.
