Default Experimenting with different imaging equipment for the Sun

So...I'm experimenting, using Thousand Oaks Optical solar film. I wanted to see if I could get away with imaging the Sun, and so the eclipse, with just my camera and my 300mm lens, or if what I want to see will require one of my telescopes. I tried it on both my 5D MkII where it's a true 300mm, and on my 7D where it's an apparent 480mm due to the crop factor. Neither produced the results I wanted... so now I have to quickly order a new sheet of filter material to make a filter for my telescope. I'll try it with my 610mm 6" astrograph. Perhaps I should get one for my 8" as well. Though I can't get prime focus with that, so I'd need a barlow, which I think makes the focal length too long. Anyway, here's what I got with just my 300mm lens. Not very impressed with it. It's not a BAD image, I'm just looking for more detail and contrast on surface texture, and hopefully prominences. And better edge definition, etc Just don't think this lens has enough aperture for that, or quite enough reach with a DSLR.

I also don't know what is the right/best method to image the Sun. Should I image it with video like planetary images and stack the frames? Or with the luminance of the Sun are single exposure stills sufficient? I don't know what I'm doing, is what I'm trying to say here and any advice would be greatly appreciated. :-)
