Nice job Bob!! It is nicely improved.

How do I find this Startools group? I used Startools to some extent on my last M42 shot, but I am really having difficulties using it completely.

Hi Patrick, thanks for the kind words. The Youtube channel is here:

    https://www.youtube.com/user/StarToo...?feature=watch

Star Tools hosts a forum here:

    StarTools • Index page

    The Astronomyforum group is here:

StarTools software - Astronomy Forums | Telescope Forums & Reviews | Astronomy Community

Form my (two days worth of) experience, the tool has a lot of potential and I will be putting some effort into getting it to deal well with my observing conditions.

I was told to only use Autodev as a visual tool to see where and how much you need to crop, I back out of the Autodev before I do anything else, I'll have to get my cheat sheet but I do not wipe while in Autodev. It's been so long since I've been out I'll have to start learning over again. Weather has been horrible.

Bob, I really like your second rendition. Well done. I have never tried the repair tool, so I am motivated to give it a whirl. (always looking for ways to improve) The binning functionality in StarTools is very beneficial in general as a noise reduction tool, but, it especially benefits photos taken with DSLR's, which tend to be over-sampled for those of us not living in a desert. For cooled CCD cameras that have an image scale that is more appropriate for the seeing conditions, the benefit is not as dramatic.

I have found the PS plugin Focus Magic to be significantly better than the deconvolution tools in StarTools. Also, the functionality of Noise Ninja puts StarTools to shame in my opinion, except for color and chromatic noise. StarTools provides the best results for basic color balance, including dealing with the overly green that can dominate some images. I have grown to like the StarTools basic color noise algorithms that have to be performed near the end since tracking has to be turned off. StarTools has the best algorithms I have seen for dealing with stubborn vignetting. I usually perform final tweaks in PS, including fine adjustments to stretching, color saturation, etc. (possibly because I like the manual controls it affords.)

Congratulations Bob - The reprocess is a smashing hit!!

Much improved details, and, the color is much better too. Excellent job on your first ever StarTools image. That tool for fixing stars is nice too.

Thats pretty impressive. I'm really getting the appetite to really have a stab with StarTools. Must admit, i was a bit dazzed by all the functions when i first looked at it. But, seems like the results speak for themselves..
