    Default First Photo

Went out with the camera last night for the first time ever and snapped a few pictures. Not sure If I was out of focus or the tripod was vibrating. Just noticed these were not as sharp as they should have been.

    ISO 3200 15sec f4.5 Nikon D5000 on a pretty crap tripod.

1st photo Caught a Meteor slashing through Orion. Which I think was neat for my first ever attempt at this. Raw converted to JPG no editing PS

    DSC_0024a.jpg

2nd Photo is my first attempt at Deep Sky Stacker. Can see M31 in there. 9x15 sec, Darks, and Bias no flats. Tiff Converted to Jpg no editing in PS

    M31small.jpg

Are these typicals raw's or am I out of focus?

    Any suggestions would be great.

What is the focal length of your lens?I have the same setup with my kit lens. Great pics btw. What i do for focus is too zoom in to 55mm and manual focus until I'm happy then zoom out to 18mm for stuff field pics. You can get pretty good focus that way. Keep up the good work

Nice meteor. You are definitely out of focus. Two things to remember on these types of shots. 1) never use auto focus and 2) never trust that infinity marked on your lens barrel is correct. If your camera can do magnified live view without the noise making it impossible, then that is a very good way to go. I find that I can do a fairly good job focusing through the viewfinder, but it is not ideal. I would be careful about generalizing Adam's suggestion of focusing and then zooming. It may work well on the lens he is using, but many lens show focus shift when zoomed. So, if you can check the focus at the FL you intend to shoot. But if you have Adam's lens, he has verified that focus and zoom works for that lens so that will definitely make it easier. If you have a different zoom, you may want to experiment first and see if it stays in focus when zoomed.

It is the Nikon 18-55 f4.5 lens that comes stock. I adjusted my focus in manual on a street light that was at least 500+ yards away and got it pretty good on that.

Any good tips or tricks for focusing? brightest star I can find through the viewfinder?

I take a test pic and make tiny adjustments on the focus ring until I dial it in. Works great but does take a little time
