    Thumbs up New Astrophotography Contest!!!!!

The New International AF.net Astrophotography Contest
    ************************************************** ************************************************** ***

    Why submit:

Biggest Astronomy Community in the World - Voting by over 101,000 members.
    Eternal bragging rights
Eternal glory here Astronomy Astrophotography Contest Winners
    Certificate of Eternal Glory
Community Badge Award of Eternal Glory

    --------------------

    New rules effective 5/28/2015

You no longer need to submit your images to the old 'gmail' account!!!

Images will be chosen directly from the Astronomyforum.net Astrophotography forum LINK

UPDATE: starting with the March 2017 contest we will be also checking the new Solar Imaging sub forum for the best solar images!

note: we will only be choosing single posted images, so the images submitted for the Messier contests will not be judged. If you wish your image to be included please be sure that you only post ONE image per thread!!!! (note: if more than one image is posted ONLY the first image is eligible.) Images must be posted in the forum (no external links allowed!)

    *********************

We will still have the five categories as we had in the past and the qualifications will remain the same:

    Submission Categories:

We have 5 specific categories. The Photo Competition Moderator Team will make the decision which category you photo falls into.

    1. Deep space: Anything outside our solar system.

    2. Solar system: Anything in our solar system excluding the moon, sun, and earth and anything on them (with this definition for example, Mars is solar system as is the International Space Station).

    3. Moon: Any photograph of all or part of the moon that contains no objects from any other category.

    4. Sun: Any photograph of all or part of the sun that contains no objects from any other category.

    5. Night Scape: Any terrestrial photograph that contains one or more objects from one or more of the other categories.

"Polytopical": If your submission fits into two or more categories e.g. M45 and Venus... and you have not specified one of the categories above, the committee running the competition will decide in which category to place your photo.

The competition will be done as follows:

Monthly: The Photo Competition Moderator Team will review the images posted that month in the Astrophotography Forum and will select a monthly winner for each category. (Note: this means that an image does not have to been made in that month, only posted to the forum that month.)

No prizes are awarded for monthly winners. However they will receive a mention in a Monthly Winner Announcement Thread.

Quarterly: For the quarterly competition, the Photo Competition Moderator Team will make a poll containing the three monthly winners in the quarter for each category.
The forum membership will then select via the posted poll for the quarterly winner for each category.

    General rules:

Only forum members can participate (moderator posted images will not be included in the selections).

Only members in good standing qualify (50 posts or more).

Only photos (no videos will be considered)

The image must be made by the member using the member’s equipment (as best the moderator team can substantiate)."

Remember no images posted via links to outside websites (IE astrobin) will be allowed. Easiest way to tell if your photo will be considered is if it shows an image next to your post (like these)

    AP contest screen shot.jpg

The Quarterly Winners will receive the following:

**** A certificate from AF.net including your photo, suitable for framing! (emailed to the winners.)

**** Your photo and name posted in the AP hall of fame! Astrophotography Competition Hall of Fame & Advanced Astrophotography FAQs

**** We are working on a new sponsor for the AP contest! ****

    Great new idea Gordon.

    Just one quick question.
Will you be starting a thread for the posting of the images similar to the AP processing competition?

    Cheers

We will be going through a similar change in the "AP Processing Challenge" also. We have found it's just too complicated to post polls for as many photos as we get. Keep an eye out for the new changes coming for the AP Processing Challenge contest soon!!!

Can we submit images for monthly and quarterly? (same image)

Also, this seems messy... Is this easier for you to keep track of than having everything sent to an email account?
For example it seems id have to make double posts of some images since ive already made a.thread to show off some of my work I'd like to submit

    One thread per submission.

The email is a nightmare!!!! It's taking one person hours to consolidate, size, ID and figure out the 'can I change the photo I submitted last week' stuff. And that doesn't even include the amount of time to create the polls for voting when we have 20 plus images submitted. Just too much chance for errors and omissions.

See the example posted above for a 'perfect' submission. However keep in mind we will be checking all images submitted per the official rules so double posting is not necessary. If you are just 'showing off' your work it will be considered a 'submission' AGAIN as long as it qualifies under the 'official rules'.

Anything that was posted in April will be considered for the April monthly contest. Anything submitted in May will be considered for the May contest. etc etc. Those winners will be posted in the quarterly polls for the prizes.
