Is it necessary to specify in the title of our threads, or somewhere in the body of the text, that we want "this" particular image to be considered for the contest, or will you be making your selections based on ALL images attached to threads in the Astrophotography Forum?

Also, when you say "previously posted images are fine, as long as they were not contest winners." Won't that open the door for 100's of old images to be reposted again? The very thing the "zombie" rule (reviving old threads) was designed to eliminate?

I hope the new format makes things easier for all those involved with putting on these contests? After all, what's the point if you aren't having fun doing it?

    Good luck to all!
No description is 'necessary' however in most cases folks like to describe what the image is about.

In regards to 'previously posted images' if you took an image last year and posted it to the forum, and it wasn't a winner from one of the old contests then you can start a new thread submitting that image in the Astrophotography forum for the current contest. It wouldn't do anyone any good to 'post' to an old thread to try to 'bump' it into the contest because we look at the date the tread was started not the most recent post.

    Hope this answers your questions.

However, I think your second point should be clarified for sure. I have dozens of images that I took that I never entered in the contest. I'm sure many others are in the same situation. It would not make sense for use to re-post all of our images in order to be included in the contest. Or to start a new thread over and over again with a reprocessed image.

I'm not sure how this could be managed however. I think for the images to qualify, they should be current. Perhaps the only way would be to make it clear in the rules, and then rely on people's honesty? Not sure.

    Paul
All images posted "per the rules" will be reviewed.

Keep in mind "flooding the forum" with old images is probably not going to get you much. We are picking THE BEST each month so posting 35 old images in one month wouldn't get you, at best, more than one entry into the monthly contest....... Then the forum members will pick from 3 entries to select the winners.

My suggestion would be to pick one from THE VERY BEST you have each month. It doesn't matter when it was taken however most folks progress in their ability to capture and process so I would think the more recent images would be of better quality.

Sorry Gordon, I'm still not clear on what you mean. The AP sub-forum is a place where everyone posts their images, re-processed or not. And we ask for input on how to improve, etc. Correct?

With this new contest, my understanding is that we should continue to do as we always did, but the committee will select the best image of the month by looking at the first image in threads that have a thumbnail in the AP sub-forum. Best image will be selected, whether the owner intended to include it in the contest or not.

    Is my understanding correct?

    Thanks again.

Thanks for the quick response, Gordon.

I wasn't questioning the text accompanying the image, that usually describes the capture and processing techniques used. I was just wondering if it was necessary to state in the title, or the body of text, something like "May Submission" or "May Contest Photo"? From what I've gathered so far, it sounds like you'll be selecting your entries from EVERY thread that has an image, and singling out which images "we" would like entered with text is not necessary?

As for my statement concerning "zombie" threads, I wasn't specifically talking about actually reviving old threads (which is definitely frowned upon). What I meant was that it would open the door for 100's of images from these old threads to be posted again in new threads. Doing this would show the old images with recent dates.

I'm guessing there will be some growing pains in the beginning, like anything new. But hopefully when everything is sorted out the new contests will be fun, fair, and easy to manage for the administration.

Have a great day, and good luck in the contests!

    Paul,

All of the forums within AF.net have a 'header' at the top of each page with a description for what the forum should be used for.

The header for the "Astrophotography forum" reads as follows:

Astrophotography Forum. Photos Only Here. Please attach / post your astrophotography pictures and images here. Discussions for imaging, ccd, dslr, and mounts go elsewhere.

Perhaps you are getting it confused with the "Astrophotography Image Processing forum":

Astrophotography Image Processing Forum. Discuss stacking processing and other techniques, Photoshop, DSS, Registax, Pixinsight, Nebulosity, Maxim DL, and other software.

With this new contest, my understanding is that we should continue to do as we always did, but the committee will select the best image of the month by looking at the first image in threads that have a thumbnail in the AP sub-forum. Best image will be selected, whether the owner intended to include it in the contest or not.

    Is my understanding correct?
Correct, however we have found some of the first posts in the threads will have 2 or 3 images, those will be reviewed and considered, however it will 'ease the pain' for the moderator team, if folks just post one image per thread.

It's not a 'requirement' to include "May Submission" or anything in the thread title as we will be looking at all of the photos, however it does do a beneficial thing of calling attention to the contest.

Since we didn't specify 'when the photo was taken' it's fine to post some of your older images, we are going by the original date of the thread. So posting a new post to an old thread won't work. The date of the original thread is what we are looking for.

    Default New Astrophotography Contest!!!!!

I think what 3DRomeo is wondering (correct me if I'm wrong) and what I think about myself is the risk of people posting the same (old or new) images over and over every month. The "Might get lucky eventually"-thinking. I hope it will not be so but it would make the forum less appealing.

I would hope that wouldn't happen either. Most folks get better with AP the more images they take and process. Once the moderator team has seen an image it's pretty doubtful it would make the cut if it's been entered again and again. Our memories aren't great but with a 'team' that's used to spotting problems it is most likely going to spot something like that.

Keep in mind this is just a simple contest. It's here mostly for the 'amusement' of the membership. Part of the reason the rules changed was to try to make it easier to put this contest on. If it becomes too difficult or things get out of control, it's not hard to 'pull the plug'.

    Hi Juan,

The AF.net photo system will only accept a certain size image. If you can't load it up using the AF.net system it won't qualify for the contest per the rules:

Images must be posted in the forum (no external links allowed!)
Typically a mosaic (or any photo for that matter) can be resized to fit the parameters.

Best of luck and hope to see your images posted soon!
