Default : First Crack at Ha... Carina Nebula HaRGB

Internet is slow as heck here... Anyone who can give me the correct channel or method to incorporate Ha with RGB in PixInsight, I'm all ears...

Conditions the other night were not great, so I was only able to do 5min @ 2x2 binning to capture the Ha data... So I lost a lot of resolution when combining it with the RGB set.

What I did was calibrate and stack the Ha set, then do a dynamic align with the RGB set, then take the L channel from the Ha set and combine it with the R, G & B of the existing set... This is what I ended up with:

Obviously lost resolution doing 2x2 binning... any help y'all can give me in adding Ha data... again, please don't hesitate to point me in the right direction~

    Nice pic!

That's one way to do HaRGB. Nothing wrong with that. You can also use PixelMath to combine the L and the Ha, and/or to add a little Ha into the R channel. I have had good results playing with the SHO-AIP script.

    Keith,

I know you wrote that in very plain English lol... But I look at PixelMath and checked out the SHO-AIP and cringe because I know absolutely NOT what to do with them... The other script I checked out was the HaRVB-AIP Script, which I 'think' is specifically for combining Ha with RGB, but what I ended up with got deleted almost immediately hahaha... I'm not able to get to Harry's Astroshed to download/view the Ha combo video at the moment... so if you or anyone else could maybe give me 'caveman' step by step instructions, that would be amazing. Thank you very much for the reply, and I would assume you were the one who also deleted the duplicate thread (grr DG internet is horrible!)...

Oh well, what kind of internet does one expect for a measly $180.00 per month ;-)

BTW, to be more specific, the Ha set is 6 x 300sec @ 2x2 binning with the SBIG and the ED80. The RGB set was 2 x 60sec and 26 x 180sec... All with flats, darks and bias.

Thank you very much... I have a long way to go but I feel I'm on the right path... Black Art is definitely the right way to put it lol... A nonstop rollercoaster of curveballs!

Yes, you lose resolution with binning... Basically, binning is taking multiple pixels and combining them into one 'bigger' pixel... Almost like adding a focal reducer where you get more light and FOV per exposure at the expense of magnification... In the case of binning, the price for more photons to the chip in less exposure time is resolution because what used to take up one pixel now takes up either 2 or 4 so minute details tend to get lost rather quickly. Looking forward to adding Ha in better conditions, such as light pollution and moonlight instead of 15mph wind and passing clouds :-)

**Scratches head** I know you are typing in English but I have no idea what you are saying. I like simple things - The greatest decision I make at the telescope is put eyeball to telescope, take eyeball away from telescope. I also always use the same eye so there is no chance of confusing my brain lol

I am with you 100%... Although I find AP incredibly fascinating and see a triplet and an Edge HD in the cards... I concede it's more fun getting out with the scopes and some people and just looking at whatever happens to be in the sky... and seeing the look on people's faces when they see that "WOW" object for the first time.

As Keith said, there are a few methods to combine Ha and RGB, one of the simplest I found was the NBRGBCombination script, it is used at the linear stage. There's a good tutorial on it here Combining Colour and Narrowband Images - Astrodoc: Astrophotography by Ron Brecher, and it includes some tips on settings for the script, which is ever the tricky bit in PixInsight

These days I'm tending more towards the HARVB-AIP script, which is used at the non-linear stage, I find the reds are easier to manage after the merge.

Well I think it is a case of whatever you have fun with, thats what you do. It is probably one of the greatest assets this hobby has, there is no absolute correct way to do it.
