Precise focus in live view isn't possible without software.

Best way to focus would be using a bahtinov mask.

Hi, Welcome to the Astronomy Forum. Focusing a DSLR takes some practice and some skill. A lot of people use a Bahtinov mask but many can do the job using Live View. You said the scope was a 12 inch Meade but not what type of telescope. Some Newtonian scopes are not designed to allow focusing a DSLR at prime focus. Let us know what kind of telescope you are using. If you want to try a Bahtinov mask, do a search "Bahtinov Mask" and several sites will tell you how to make one as well as how to use it. All you need is some stiff cardboard and a sharp modeling knife.

You have a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope (SCT) that is a type widely used for astrophotography. If your DSLR has live view, you can focus it as follows:
    1. Get a very bright star in view of the telescope using an eyepiece.
    2. install the camera
    3. focus the bright star as best you can using the camera's view finder
    4. go to live view in the Camera, center the star on the live view screen and magnify the view to the max allowed by the camera, usually 10X
    5. now focus the star using the camera's live view screen. This will be an iterative process as you get close to focus you will be using slight pressure to turn the focus knob... Focusing using live view takes some practice before you get the feel of it.
    6. If you camera does not have live view then you will need to use a Bahtinov Mask or connect to a computer and use a computer program. The Bahtinov Mask is the simplier way to go and is also an excellent way to focus.

Alternative method , is to make a Bahtinov Mask. All that takes is some patience. There are several sites on the internet that will show you how to make one and better still how to use it.

A Schimdt Cassigrain Telescope(SCT) has a focal ratio of f/10. This is relatively slow for photography. Most people who use a SCT also use a 0.63 focal reducer when making images of deep space.

The LX200 is an azimuth mount. With an azimuth mount, you will have to do azimuth mount photography... 20 to 30 second exposures digitally combined into one final image. Not that difficult to do but .. You can get around this by using a wedge and putting the telescope in the equatorial mode.

Do a internet search. Google is a good search engine for this...search for "alt-azimuth mount astrophotography" Many sites will be identified that have astrophotography primers. Read them, this will help you a lot.
