Default Running Chicken & friends, mosaic.

    Hi,

It's been a while since I've posted here, had trouble with the new Astronomy web site, it was very frustrating!!!!
    Anyway I'm trying google chrome.

I was going through some data from 2013 and realised I had enough to do a mosaic of IC 2948, IC 2944 Running Chicken Nebula, Gum 39 & Gum 41.

There is three panels, and quite a few wedges of sky I had to blend in,
    Anyway, here's the final result.

8” F/4 astrograph , baader type coma corrector,. HEQ Pro 5 mount, orion mini guider.
    Camera.
    Unmodded Cannon 1100D.
Panels stacked in Deep Sky Stacker.
    Panels stitched in Microsoft ICE.
    Processed in Photoshop 7.

    Cheers,

    Justin.

Beautiful image Justin...It's good to have you and your images back!

I was away for quite awhile too, after the changes made to the website. But I seem to be locking up, and freezing, a lot less since they reworked the website again.

Question...Did you try to merge your 3 images in Photoshop too, or is Microsoft ICE your goto program for mosaics?

6 hours imaging, probably and hour each for processing each panel and 2 hours stitching it together and final processing

    Thanks Mark!

I'm still finding the site a bit glitchy but useable now.

I had to use ICE and photo shop, the nebula on the bottom right of the image would not stitch for some reason in ICE.
Iv'e come across this a couple of times even though there was plenty of overlap.

    Cheers,

    Justin.

I've never tried making a mosaic and I've never heard of Microsoft ICE. Can you make a mosaic using images shot at different focal lengths that would need to be resized to match the same scale?

To be more specific, could I make a mosaic with images shot with the same scope, some shot at prime focus and some shot through a focal reducer? The scope is an EdgeHD and if there is any difference in curvature between prime and reduced, I can't tell.

    Hi Jamee,

Hmmm, don't know and don't know!

I've had several times where images from the same scope and camera wouldn't stitch together for unknown reasons.
They were on the same scale.
Other times I've stitched together images I've altered in scale and it stitched them together.

ICE is a free download, so all I can say is give it a go.

    Cheers,

    Justin.
