Default poorly processed M31 and M8

I finally had a clear night last night...
Was able to push my exposures from 120 sec to 180 sec for the first time also..
My problem now is processing.. I've been trying and trying to get GIMP but it just seems to suck.. I know processing in DSS isn't the best but I am getting better results doing that.. I get it decent looking in DSS then tweak in GIMP.. Think I'm going to buy Star Tools tomorrow and reprocess everything. Luckily I keep all my autosaves..

    M31.. m31-16bit-8-3-13-dssedited-resize.jpg
    5 @ 30 sec
    5@ 60 sec
    5@ 120 sec
    19 @ 180 sec
DSS liked 30 of the 34
    stacked with
    30 dark
    32 flat
    25 bias

    M8 M8-16bit-dssedited-gimp-resize.jpg
    5@ 30 sec
    5@ 60 sec
    20@ 180 sec
    DSS liked 24 of 30
    25 darks
    32 flats
    25 bias

If anyone has any processing advice I'd love to hear it!!
    Gotta Love this forum..
So many helpful people.. Thank all of you!

Both are decent images. The best advice I can give you is to get a program to process them. As you're finding, collecting the data is only half the work.

Hello Kurt. Your B&W image of M31 is most enjoyable. The M8 has a lot of nice nebulosity, but the color is kind of heavy on the carmine/brown. Thanks for sharing these nice captures with us, and best wishes on your imaging/processing endeavors.

    Very nice images Kurt!

Did you use your 6" Newt, and at what ISO setting did you shoot them at?

I'm like you right now...No problem with the data. Just a severe lack of processing skills. For me, emission nebulae are the worst. I just can't seem to be able to get them right. So I have an ever growing pile of unprocessed emission nebula images going all the way back to my very first image taken in January of of the Orion Nebula (my avatar photo). I'm sad to admit that I too have been getting some of my best results processing my images in DSS, and then touching them up in PS. The color usually isn't very good, and I tend to blow them out more. But sometimes I just can't seem to get the image to pop using just PS alone. I know it's just a severe lack of processing skills. But sometimes you just have to do what gives you the best results until you can learn to do them the correct way.

Good luck in your quest to learn the fine art of AP processing...and keep the photos coming!

    Thanks Mark!
Whoops.. forgot to add ISO 800.. It was late!
I'm imaging with my 5SE and a focal reducer on my AVX mount.
I have been thinking about trying out the newt. I was able to get prime focus with it following whammond's advice. I just know my 5SE better and haven't wanted to possibly "waste" a clear night.

It is frustrating how bad I am at processing.. PS and so many programs are so expensive and I'm afraid to spend a bunch of money and still not know / figure out what the hell I'm doing .. lol. I'm going to try the demo of Star Tools. You can process but can't save the final image. Plus it only costs about 57$ U.S. Figure if it or I am a bust at least I'm not out the close to 300$ for Pixinsight.. or who knows how much for PS and the like.

I can't believe the detail you got in your M31 image using only 5" SCT. It looks better than many I've seen taken with scopes twice that big!

If it came down to buying just one program, and you really want to do your AP justice, I'd get PixInsight. It's expensive, but still a LOT cheaper than PS. PI is designed just for AP, too. Whereas PS isn't. I don't have PI, but would love to have it from what I've seen, and heard from others.

One thing good, like you said, is that we always have the originals to play around with anytime we choose, or with whatever program we should get in the future...Unless your drive fails, and you don't have a backup lol.

Keep up the good work Kurt...We'll get this right one of these days!

Looking at the color (or rather the lack thereof) I wonder if you got all bits that DSS can give you. Did you use ImageMagick to get all 16 bits? I pulled up the color by stretching it like mad but it does not look great. During the stretching I noticed these round streaks left of the center, what are those? Other than the lack of color it seems pretty good.
