Default Orion Nebula, Running Man and a street light.

    orionrunningmanstreetlight-XL.jpg

The street light closest to my observatory has been acting weird for some time. It turns on slowly, turns off turns back on. It's also noticeably brighter and whiter then the other redish streetlights that are everywhere. Thankfully I only have the bank of lights on one side but it means I only get a few hours on certain objects and none on others like M16,17 20. I actually lost the guide star eventually because it was completely washed out by the light.

I still should get a good M42 this year just have to start right when it rises. This was taken with my new astrotech 66mm (cropped the frame) and CGE mount. Everything seems to be working well. Just need a few clear nights..

Not sure I like the streetlight, but the nebula sure looks good.

Very nice, too bad about that street light. Have you tried attaching a longer dew/light shield to cut down on the reflected light? I use Proto Star flockboard material as a dew/light shield on my ota's for the very same reason. Thanks for posting, and good luck with the lights....

    Cheers,

Have you tried taking a baseball bat to that street light? Which brand bat would you recommend?

I'd need a 200 inch bat or larger. It's gotta be 25 feet up or higher. They are every 50-75 feet (guestimate) along the street. This is the only one that effects a large portion of the sky and allows me to have no light inside my observatory and still able to see everything.

The weird thing about this light is about 6 months ago it started flickering, however it turns white and bright for 30 seconds or so turns off and starts the process again. There is a spectrum shift from the redish orange that the other streetlights are to more of a 10k white that just blows everything out of the water. I would call and complain but they notice my observatory which is a by-law violation as you're only allowed one structure in the backyard and I have a shed as well.

I think you should follow Paul's advice and extend your dew shield. Thats a beautiful picture being wrecked by that streetlight, and the problem is fixable.(without shooting the light or throwing rocks at it )

You know, most of those lights have photosensors on top of them, and if you shine a bright spot light at it long enough, it will turn off. Not sure how long they stay off for, but may buy you enough time

I think the lights act weird because the other lights are flooding the sensor. As Erk said, trip the sensor with another light source. You might want to try a laser pointer mounted on a tripod.
