    Default My M31 version

It just dawned on my I never posted my M31 up. I imaged this one August 22d, with a lot of moon. It's minutes of lights with the Nikon D5100. 10, 60 sec exps @ ISO 1000...15, 120 sec exps @ ISO 800..and 5, 240 sec exps @ ISO 500. 5 darks and 5 bias for each set..no flats. STV90r on the iEQ45w/TDM. Stacked in DSS, processed in PS5.

    m31_09_04_filtered (1024x667).jpg

I've processed this 3 or 4 ways, but I like this rendition the best, added a little pink around the core. Love to add some more time to this, but we have nothing but clouds and rain for another week or so.....

It's 60 minutes of data total.

    Cheers all,

    Paul

    Nice!

How are you going about processing M31?
I'm still cheating a little bit by doing some of the post processing in DSS.

Hi, I don't do any processing in DSS, except to adjust the RGB curve to darken the image. All my fiddling is done in PS5. Basic stretching with levels and curves, a lot of minor curves adjustments to specific areas to highlight colors, some Match Color adjustments, and then a luminance layer just to brighten the whole galaxy a tad. I follow this luminance guide: Astrophotography: Adding a Luminance Layer in Photoshop - YouTube If I can do it (processing for dummies) I know you can also...

Oh, a note about adjusting the RGB levels in DSS. I used to have a heck of a time, I used to select 'all' and then try to drag the triangular icon with my mouse...it was always too much or too little, especially hitting the 'sweet spot'. I have discovered (eureka) that if you select 'all', then click on the triangle two or three times...it allows you to drag the curve using the left/right up/down arrows on your keyboard, very precise, and as a bonus, the histogram just seems to jump into the best position for you. Try it, you'll like it... Oh, I have 'Align RGB channels in final image selected' in my settings.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Beautiful job Paul. Did you do some different adjustments in different parts of the image? The star field looks just a little different around the edges than in the center of the image. Really makes the galaxies stand out. That's something I'm going to have to put on my "learn to do list."

Hi, that's probably due to the luminance layer, which is created in a duplicate image in lab color instead of RGB. Opening the lab color 'channels' and disabling the a and b channel leaves you the luminance layer only. Then you copy it and paste it into your original image, select 'luminance' and adjust with the opacity slider. It's all explained in the link I posted above.

This method really makes the galaxies or nebulae pop.

Hope the info helps...practice on some of your existing jpeg images, just don't forget to switch back to RGB color when you flatten the image...
